Question about 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

Acceleration problems I have a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer with the 4.3 "W" engine and auto transmission. Recently I started having problems with acceleration, cold the vehicle will accelerate to full throttle with just a slight hesitation but as the vehicle warms up the problem increases to the point that just a slight acceleration causes the vehicle to bog. While driving it will get to the point that the vehicle will hardly run, it runs smooth but you cannot give it any gas. I can stop the vehicle and let it set for a few minutes (2-3) and it will start and run good for awhile but the problem returns. I ran a code scan and got 2 codes PO108 - catalyst system efficiency below threshhold and PO507 - idle control system RPM higher than expected. I checked the idle air control system and found a faulty vacuum line and replaced it. The catalytic convertor was removed from the vehicle several months ago. I have checked fuel pressure to the rail and it is well within specs. I also replaced the "spider" injector system, EGR valve, coolant temp sensor, mass air flow, fuel filter and ignition module and coil. I also have disconnected the exhaust in front of the catalytic convertor leaving only the pipe from the manifolds and my problem persist. I checked for cracks in the intake and checked the throttle body when I replaced the injector system. I suspect something electrical as the problem gets worse the hotter the motor gets and briefly straightens out when switched off and restarted. Also the exhaust is very hot. The engine is in good shape, good compression on all cylinders, good oil pressure and no knocks or pings. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the assistance stressedbyti. I have already checked both those and found no problems with either. I did located the problem however. It appears the fuel pump was replaced recently ( I purchased the Blazer 3 months ago for my daughter). I dropped the tank to check the pump since I had checked everything else. I found that on one of the lines going to the pump the lock that secures the line had been damaged and the line was not properly secured. There are three lines to this pump, a fuel line, a return line and an air line that attaches to the EVAP system. The air line was the one damaged. I repaired it and now it runs better than ever. I'm not sure how this caused my problem, the PCM never set an EVAP code. Perhaps there was too much air getting into the tank. I'm not sure, the fuel pressure to the rail was always between 54 and 62 pounds, enough to run the engine. Perhaps it sent a false reading to the PCM which caused it to decrease fuel to the injectors. No matter the why the Blazer runs like a champ now. Thanks for the help.

It could be excessive play in the distributor shaft. Or even a collapsing rubber fuel line.

Where is the starter relay

Unless you have auto start, then you won't have a starter relay. You will have a starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is attached to the the starter with two small screws. The starter is bolted to the bottom of the engine against the transmission housing.

Where are the shift modules on a 1997 chevy s10 blazer auto tranny the car won't down shift properly into low gear after coming to a complete stop. this is the third transmission for this car.

If this is third tranny ,I would start to begin thinking of a computer problem.I woyld find it hard to beleve that 3 trannys in a row are the fault.

1997 chey pu auto trans 1st and 2nd shift good drive doesn't shift until rpm's are 3500-4000 rpm

Do you get a check-engine light, or does the transmission O/D light flash? Many times, this is due to a speed sensor on the transmission. When the sensor goes, the transmission has to do default shift timing and it will shift very late. Usually, this will set a code in the onboard computer.

1997 chevy blazer 4*4 will not go into reverse , drives and shifts sluggish in forward gears . parked overnight went to back up the next morning and vehicle was like neutral in reverse. fluid level is ok .

You may have a bad revers solenoid. Check the fuse and look for any of the fuse to be bad like the transmission fuse. Best thing to do is get the blazer scanned at Auto Zone free of charge for any DTC codes that may be affecting your transmission's performance. Try this, place the ignition to the run position and pull the ECM(BATT) fuse out for 30 seconds and then place it back in. Start the Blazer, it may stall but let it. Just start it again the ECM is just relearning the engine and transmission, let it idle for 1 min and then go for a test drive. This should reset everything in the truck's ECM like the day it was first started and any DTC code will be new and active. Do not add any additives like lucas transmission fluid repair, that will just make it worst. Any additive that may the transmission thicker will make the fluid retention more making the shift solenoid stick causing shift conflicts. Good luck and keep me posted. No revers is ether a bad solenoid, bad PCM signal, or broken sun gear.
