I read in a in another site to drain oil, replace filter and put in synethic oil. Then run at 2500 rpms for 30 minutes. What causes the ticking is varnish building up on the lifters. I have a 1995 passport also. What I do if change oil often and also run it on the highway about 65 to 7 miles an hour for at least 90 minutes. Seems to stop the problem. I drive in the city mainly and about a month after an oil change it starts again. Drives me crazy, but I love my passport.

Bad lifters or at wort push rods wearing out try putting 10 40 oil instead of 10 30 since it has high mileage if that does not fix it it is either the rods or the lifters simplest thing firt have lifters checked out it may be a loose lifter

2.0 Liter, 2003 Rav4. Car had a ticking noise, Toyota replaced serptine belt and still makes ticking noise. Toyota says its lower engine rod bearings. I used stethascope and noise seems to be coming from...

big end bearings( lower engine rod bearings to confuse) knock at idle and get louder with rpm
if the noise changes with rpm and you are hearing it near the ac compressor then it could be the ac pulley bearing
test if it is the compressor by listening and then turning the ac off the pulley will still spin but the compressor stops
if the noise remains , replace the pulley bearings

It sounds like a valve lifter is slightly loose. If it only "ticks" at idle it should not be a problem. If it begins to increase in volume and starts to tick at any other time than idle you need to have it adjusted. It could also be a small amount of sludge deposit blocking the oil. If your oil is dirty change it and the filter.

Can a bad idler pulley on a 1997 saturn with a 1.9 liter sohc engine cause a plastic like ticking noise. The pulley has a little play in it and all the other pulley seem to be good with no play in them. ...

Sometimes the idler pulley can begin to rattle a bit, the noise is most often associated with the the idle pulley damper mounts. Just a tiny movement here can cause that audible clicking. It does not harm the engine and can usually be heard only at idle so if yo can live with it, great.

Ticking sound

this is caused by the hydraulic VALVE lifters sticking or being worn out, other less common issue is a flat camshaft, try putting a can of BERRYMENS BRAND CHEMTOOL ADDITIVE IN THE OIL, IF THIS IS A DIRT OR VARNISH RELATED PROBLEM THEN AFTER 100 MILES OR SO IT SHOULD STOP OR AT LEAST QUITE DOWN, U MUST CHANGE THE OIL AFTER NO MORE THAN 100 MILES IF U DO THIS WITH THE CHEMTOOL.
