How do you replace the license plate lamp?, after taking off covering in hatchback area there doesn't appear a way to get to the lamps but observing from outside car there are 2-lamps over the license plate under a plastic cover but i was afraid to try prying them off to get to lamps because they might break?

remove the plastic cover on the car boot. There is some screws that you need to remove front the plastic cover to get access to the lamps that illuminates the licence plate.
Replace the small lamps and voila !!!
Sounds like a short circuit here ? You will need to locate the short circuit . Most probable is the tail lamps and their connections , then number plate lights , then any hinged wiring going from body to a door or trunk (ie No plate illum lights) area . Sometimes the dash dimmer can be a problem . Good luck
