I personally just came across your post sorry I never seen it earlier. First of all you only have one timing chain / belt and for $ 3700.00 you could have a new engine inatalled. Good luck and remember to rate all of the solutions you get, thanx.

Where is the timing chain tensioner located on a 4.0 SOHC, 1998 Ford Explorer 2 door

The tensioner is located at the rear (right side) of motor. Jack the car up, remove right front wheel, remove the splash guard. Looking up, above the exhaust manifold near rear of motor you'll see a BLACK 25mm or 27mm bolt head....That's the tensioner.

97 ford exporer timing issue

There are three engines used in a 97 model. The 4.0 single overhead cam V6 engine uses a timing chain in the front and in the rear, one for each cam. The left side is in the front and the right side is in the back. You would have to take the engine out to access the rear chain.
The 4.0 overhead valve engine and the V8 engine only have one chain in the front.

What would make the front wipers quit and the rear go all the time, 2002 ford explorer 4 door

possibly a malfunctioning multifunction switch, turn signals and such, recommend dealer repair this situation as it involves removing the steering wheel to repair if it has failed.
the other could be broken and shorted wires, again dealer as there are a ton of wires and you would need a wiring diagram to follow to get correct wires for repair.

Very bad rattle noise in top of a 4.0 overhead cam .gas engine but sounds like a diesel !

Sounds like a bad timing chain probably in the passenger side rear of the head. If it the one in the front on the other side that one is not too bad but if its the one in the back on the passenger side its a big job. (have to pull the engine out of the Explorer) Its the chain that runs the cam. The guides go bad and make it rattle like a son of a gun but will still seem to run okay. Stop running it, if the chain jumps your engine is shot. At the point you are at it only needs a chain and new guides. Hope this helps good luck. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I just did a rear chain in a 1999 overhead cam a week ago and not too many people know much about changing them or timing them.

1999 Explorer. P0442 code. How repair and expected cost if shop does it?

P0442 is a slow evap leak. Most likely a evap line (made out of metal or nylon) running from fuelpump/sending unit up towards front of truck along frame is rotted. Or the gas tank filler assembly has a leak. Neither of these can easily be spotted by eye. Best way to pinpoint actual leak is with a smoke machine. It backfeeds a smoke solution through entire system allowing to pinpoint exact location of leak. A shop will charge you for this test, usually a minimum charge &/or time involved times their labor rate per hour. Once leak is known they or you can do the repair.

I have a Ford Explorer 1999. I have been told timing chain gards need replacing which are plastic. The motor need to come out to do front and back at $7,000 AUS.

Yes Ford Explorers are like that, The timing chain tensioners are plastic and need replaced with the chains. The engine has to be removed, please replace all chains and related parts at this time. This will save you money and downtime later. There are multiple chains on these Fords.

How to set timing chain for 1997 ford explore

The best way to do that outside of having your own personal mechanic is to purchase a repair manual from Auto Zone or some other parts retailer. They have step by step repair instructions with photos based on a complete teardown and rebuild of your car. I have used Haynes Repair Manuals and they are around $20-25 each. Best investment for a used car owner.
