LS400 1996 Steering wheel doesn't go down to driving positon

When car is started it doesn't go down so i have to drive like i'm driving a bus. Also if I pull the knob to make it go down it won't instead makes a harsh grinding sound. Pushing the seating memory doesn't work either.

Please help!

I have the same problem. I keep hearing that I need to replace the whole steering column.

1995 LS 400. The steering wheel will telescope but not adjust down. When I press the button, it makes a griding sound like plastic gears grinding.

I have the same problem! It came out of the blue! But at the same time...my disc brake light came on telling me to replace my brake pads and i'm wondering if this has anything to do with it. My theory, is the steering wheel will put intself in the up position if the brakes are worn for the airbag to deploy if the brakes are going bad.

Save money and just remove the plastic gear and flip around. using one side of the gear has taken its toll by wearing out.

Find out what is causing noise from full steering lock on right and left , from stationery positon

Depends on what the noise sounds like. Some noise can be normal if you are holding the steering wheel at full lock . That is the pressure from the pump pushing hydraulic fluid through the steering box. If it is usually loud at the slightest turn..could be bad steering pump , leaking hose, leaking seal at steering box, even a bad belt.

have the battery tested as sounds like a complete electrical failure at best , if battery ok then i'd check the timing belt hasn't broken , if this is ok then the drive belts for the steering , alternator etc , this really needs to been seen to give a specific diagnosis , get a mechanic for an hour and get a diagnosis and quote , hope this is of help

WHY WHEN GREEN DRIVE LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON CAR WILL NOT CRANK

Check the solder joints on the Main Relay (tucked somewhere up under the dash near the steering wheel?) for dry joints, i cured a friend's car by resoldering all the joints on the back of that relay. Googled "main reay" for directions to find it and then fix it

Remove and install steering wheel kia sportage 1998

Why would you get involved with the steering wheel ?

You paid a repair shop that obviously doesn't do very good work

Take it back

If the steering wheel was not removed for whatever your
car was in the shop for ,then you don't remove it to resolve
the issue.

If the steering rack was replaced, then they did a terrible job
putting it back together

Wow, that's a lot of symptons you have there. But i think you may have a PCI bus communication problem. The PCI Bus system is a one-wire communication system. It allows the various modules (computers) on the vehicle to communicate with each other and share information. This information sharing reduces wiring complexity. Try this, disconnect the negative terminal form the battery for about 20-30 minutes, this is like rebooting a computer. Reconnect and check for symptons. I suggest trying this super simple fix first before doing complicated testing or parts replacements.

Good luck, i hope this helps.

My steering wheel in my 2008 Ford Fusion SE has been locking up when I'm driving. The Ford place said that that year model does not have a steering wheel lock. Is this correct?

I don't know for a fact but this seems very odd to me that your vehicle would not have a steering wheel lock. Further, it is more odd that the wheel would lock unexpectedly while driving. Obviously, you cannot drive it in this condition. I recommend you take the car to the Ford Dealer and have them repair it even if it means replacing the steering column. You certainly don't want the thing locking up while you are driving ... all sorts of terrible pictures come to my mind ... running into oncoming traffic ... off the right hand side of the road ... off the bridge into the valley below ... into a group of chldren waiting for the bus ...

Please get this fixed as soon as you can.

My 2001 Audi TT's steering is heavy...is it because it's a 4 wheel drive? I've had it for 4 years and haven't checked the steering wheel fluid...

The all wheel drive will not effect the steering. I'd start with the steering fluid as it may be low or beginning to break down. I assume this issue is new and has not always feelt heavy; if so this might be the pump failing or the steering rack which the pump delivers fluid too.

I hope this may help,
Tom

Very heavy steering on escort xr3i

it varied across the range, if you can see a bottle with a steering wheel icon on top then yes, however the older escorts where heavy to steer, i think that it was later on that they started adding power steering.
