1996 Cadillac Deville~ Vats problem!

Got a new vats key and it worked fine for 3 days now the car is in "starting disabled" mode.is there any way to disable the vats so I can at least start this thing and get it to a mechanic? No more error messages of "wait 3 minutes" That was before I got the new key. Thanks Sandi

OK fixed this problem myself for about $2 and some time working on it but problem solved! Bought an resistor the same value as my keys resistor value.Mine was a #3 and the key was a #3. There is a orange wire coming from the steering column with two white wires inside that connects to the main wiring harness with a ton of wires on it. This is located under the dash knee plate, under the steering column, near the brake peddle.make sure you have the right wire before doing anything.Measure the OHMS or the resistor value of your key, there are 15 different values so must find the right one. Carefully cut the two white wires that are wrapped in orange from the harness and leave enough wire there to solder the resister to them.Match the resister value of your key with a resister and solder the resister to the wire the is coming from the harness. This bypasses the VATS and you can use your key. Now one bad thing is your vehicle anti theft system(VATS) is disabled but everything else works, including your keyless entry and the starting of the car. A thief would have to have a key to match you vehicle anyway to get the ignition to turn so...... Now you can call a lock smith and he will do this for you if he knows how for about $100 or you can have the dealer change the ignition cynlinder for about $600. I am a woman and I did this myself so not hard once I figured it out!

Here is a great write-up on how to completely bypass the VATS system including the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM). This is what saved my car: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass

  • Anonymous May 01, 2010

what I learnt at my expenses is that the resistor only bypass the key and the lock, but doesn't get rid of the VATS module. This resistor thing is exactly what I did on my Park Ave and worked for a couple of months... then the car would not start anymore. And I thought I already bypassed VATS, so I started changing lots of other parts and sensors with no success till I found that write-up that I suggested above in my previous answer (http://newrockies.ca). The guy explained me very well how it works and it works by sending directly to the PCM computer the signal that it expects otherwise from the VATS module. This way nothing else in the VATS chain is needed anymore and no security problems can ever arise anymore in the life of the car.

Bypassing 92 cadillac deville vats system

There are ways to bypass the system, but without knowing what the correct resistance in the chip is, its not going to be easy or cheap.
There are a dozen or so different chips, each with a different resistance. The resistance completes the circuit for the VATS system sensor. You can buy a trick box to wire into the circuit, or have the computer changed to skip the VATS signal.
As long as the computer you have now does not get the signal from the VATS the injectors will not work.

I have a 1998 cadillac deville that when I start it, It runs fine, but when I turn it off and try to restart it, It won't start, says starting dissabled, remove key, but if you let it set for awhile it...

If you are getting a starting disabled message, it's an indication that your security system is rejecting your ignition key. Your car is equipped with the VATS security system which requires a key with a resistor attached (small chip). Over time the sensor inside the cylinder will not recognize the key. Usually a new key will fix the problem. In more serious cases, it's the cylinder itself that's bad and needs replacement.

How to disable vats on a 1990 cadillac deville

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.
----- http://vats.likeabigdog.com/

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks
----- http://newrockies.ca?ap_id=judd0081 ----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites.

It works for:
Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.
If your car has the chip in the key or in the lock cylinder, then you can save it with this Full Bypass.

How do u disable a 94 cadillac deville anti theft system

U can bypass it (called the VATS system) but not fully disable it, what is done mimics the key code to fool the VATS module into sending a OK to start signal to the fuel injection computer (called the ECM). go to the web link below for instructions on the bypass.

My theft system is on and my 1997 cadillac deville will not start what can i do?

you will need to replace the vats lock cylinder and key. the wires break at the ignition switch. the new cylinder will come with a dummy key . you will need to get a new vats key cut to that blank. take yor old key or vin# to the dealership so they wil know what your vats# is.

I cannot locate the starter relay on my 1992 cadillac deville

this is a security system problem most likely and has nothing to do with any relay. You may have a defective VATS module or a defective VATS key sensor or a defective key, is the little piece of wire still embedded in the shaft of the key? VATS stands for Vehicle Anti Theft.
