You have what we called resistor block. it is a series of resistor to bring down the voltage of the blower to decrease its speed.

if one resistor is broke, then it would only work on high. they are normally located in the blower housing.
it has four of five wires depending on how many speed you got.

How do I check my fan switch air cond. blower motor?

2014 post.? old post, its DC motor NOT A.c.
direct current, not alternating current motor.
no need to guess, use a voltmeter, and save lots of cash, for sure..... a $10 voltmeter works,.

first off there are 2 systems. manual and auto
which is it? (options day 1)
on this car you scan it, first. it has DTC errors
not to be ignored, if present.

let me answer for all car HVAC car owners.
it can be many things.
1: fuses blow (dead fan)
2: wires bad, cut, or melted or corroded (weak fan)
3: controller is bad.
4: the dampers not open fully.
5: if HVAC has fan resistor it can fail on low speeds but not high. (or fail only on high)
6: if the fuse on the left below is blown there will be no high speed, Fuse #35 blown. no high.

note how this unique car runs a relay just for high. see drawing below.ff37835b-9047-4b0d-91e8-44f56ef6ba66.jpg

for sure the motor is last.
the fan can be hot wired, before removal
if passes that test its GOOD.
what matters is 12vdc (13.3 to 15v engine running)
to the fan.
and if only one speed fails, and not high say so
or if only high speed fails, say so.
as that set of symptoms is never a fan.
for sure if it runs ok on high.,
so fuses first.'
then the relay if high fail.s.

HVAC controls overheating

fan motor most likely at fault, low speeds cause extra heat in motor

If the blower motor only works on high mode, then its problem with blower motor resistor. ------------------ The blower motor resistor needs to be replaced. This will make blower motor work on all modes. ----------- Thanks.

AC and Heater fan will only work on high speed, all fuses good. any ideas thanks, Dave

When the blower fan will only work on high speed setting this means the fans speed control resistor is burned out, when it fails the fan defaults to high speed only. The fan resistor is located next to the fan and held into the cooling air duct by 2 screws near the blower motor. The part is fairly cheap and easy to replace.

I have a 2002 Elantra. Yestreday the lower fan speeds on the air conditioner fan stopped working (positions 1,2,3). The High speed (position 4) works. Any ideas how to correct?

The blower motor resistors or fan switch itself are defective.
High speed has no resistors B+ goes straight to blower motor.

The blower for the front a/c and heater only works intermittently, and usually works when the weather is cold. The condenser still gets power. Do I need to replace the blower motor or is the problem in...

You will need to check the fuses and pull them a little and the wires a little too. If the unit doesn't come on then - try all fan speeds as well.
I will venture a professioanl guess you can pull the fan motor and replace it and this will solve the problem which sounds like the fan is on it's last leg.

Of course once your into the panel you will have a better idea and this is the only way to answer your question fully.

When the fan is on high -- it will get more power sent to it so this is the most likely place it will work

I have 2001 Volvo S80 and the heater and AC comes on for a minute or two and then shuts off. The dealer said it was the blower mower burned out. How can that be if it works now and then?

Assuming that the dealer is correct and isolated the problem down to the blow motor...
it IS possible for the motor to work intermittently due to heat buildup. Malfunctions due to heat will call the motor to run fine for a bit, and then quit when the motor reaches a high enough temperature to cause a malfunction. It would then quit working until it cooled back down, and repeat the process.

Whether is it just dead, or it is intermittently dead, for all intensive purposes, the motor is no longer usable and needs to be replaced with a new unit.
