I have had battery problems but during long intervals.  Had the battery checked but it was fine.  Currently getting about 38MPH but failed inspection with PO133, PO341, PO404 and P1404.  The Oxygen sensor was replaced, PO133, but the engine light remains on.  I just wondered if a short somewhere near the battery was causes these problems.  Thanks for your time.

Went to get my 1996 Saturn inspected, and it failed. Am perplexed because the only explanation on the inspection report was a failure to read the cars computer? There has been no mechanical problem with the car,but the battery light and thermostat light keep blinking almost continuosly. Temperature gauge is reading normal. No clue as to what to do to get it to pass inspection. Help!

To BIGHWEELS197, take your car to AutoZone and have them scan the computer - they'll do it for free, whereas the dealer will charge an hour's labor. Post the codes here and we can determine the problem.

To wjcomet, here are your code definitions:

P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1) - this means that the primary O2 sensor on the bank of cylinders with cylinder number 1 in it is not heating up quickly enough. The heating element is eventually getting it to temperature (it has to be heated up to work) but it's getting to be too long to heat up, which can fail you for cold-start emissions. You'll have to replace this sensor eventually.

P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

This indicates a problem with your cam angle sensor. It could be that the sensor's pickup is not working right anymore (this does happen) but it could also be because your O2 sensor isn't getting to temperature soon enough and excess emissions are being detected, the car's computer may think that the cam position is off. If the cam isn't timed right, excess emissions can happen, so the computer may believe that's what is happening. I wouldn't be surprised however if the O2 sensor that's going bad is causing this code as well.

P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance

Indicates a failure of the EGR valve. Again, there's a chance that the failing O2 sensor can trigger this.

P1404 is a manufacturer-specific auxiliary emissions control failure code. I don't have access to that code's definition for your car, but again it's likely to be a result of the O2 sensor fault that you're having, since it's emissions-related and the O2 sensors are the main controllers of emissions on a car.

My advice would be to change that O2 sensor, have the codes reset, and see which ones, if any, return. If none come back, you likely had only the O2 problem and that fault caused the other codes as well. If one or more of the codes returns, we'll have to troubleshoot those individually.

OBD2 works for getting codes causing check engine light.
Cannot communicate to NYS DMV to receive inspection.
It will pass inspection. No check engine lights or codes. Problem is communication with inspection machine.

I still do not know the answer to the problem.

There is a problem if you leave a check engine light on to long there is what techs call. Check light burn in the code get burn in to momery. first have a code check due fix the basic line problem if you have done that you will need a new computer ECM

Engine sputters, replaced both oxygen sensors, check engine light is on. Need to pass emmissions test and auto inspection

you need to have the code checked. most auto parts stores do it for free. that will tell you whats causing the light to come on.

I have a 2007 toyota corolla automatic.. I have had the check engine light on and cannot get it inspected with the light on i brought it too a garage and the transmission specialist said that that code...

Any code that puts on the check engine light is a failure for inspection. Your mechanic has given you bad information. What you need to do is fix the code causing problem then drive vehicle for a few days to reset all inspection monitors. You will not pass inspection with a check engine light on unfortunately. Hope this helps.

Wont pass nys emission inspection. check engine light wont turn off.

Have the computer scanned (see my tips and tricks section for a free way to do so - click my screenname and go to Tips and Tricks). There are either latent codes (codes which are set but are not tripping a check-engine light) or you have an issue with a readiness code.

Once the codes are scanned, post them here as a reply/comment and I can work with you on solving the issue.

Cant get service engine soon light to stay off to get inspected.

Take your car to an autozone store and have it scanned to determine what the issues are and then have it cleared. THat should turn off the light for a time. Then drive it immediately to be inspected.

U-joints NYS Inspection

Yes it matters to the inspector, if it's standers part or after market part that was added and not functioning. They can fail it, I had Off road light's on my truck and one did not work but it was illegal to use them on the road i still failed my inspection till i replaced the bulb.
I ended removing the light, didn't feel like driving off to replace the bulb and come back to get it inspected again.
Good luck and hope this helps, guess it depends on how strick the inspector is.

2000 Saturn SL2 fails smog due to failure of OBD Self test

Some vehicles require very specific drive cycles (called "drive traces" if you perform them on a road simulator or dyno) to activate certain self-checks like the catalyst and EVAP monitors. As a general rule, doing some stop-and-go driving around town at speeds up to about 30 mph followed by five to seven minutes of steady 55 mph highway speed driving will usually set most or all of the monitors. Consequently, if you're checking an OBD II system and discover that one or more of the monitors have not run, it may be necessary to test drive the vehicle to set the remaining monitors.

You should talk to a good emission tec, if this is not throwing a code, it is hard to say if that one of the components could be bad. O2,pump,convert, HeO2, every part of the emission system.

With a 1000 miles, and doing what is says above just before the test, and ending driving at the test
should be plenty. If it is not, you will have to have each emission part checked, or when the computer
is plugged in it might show a code that did not trip dash light.
