Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

1999 dodge ram delayed and erratic shifting

I have a 1999 dodge ram 4x4 sport the problems i am having are, the transmission seems like it is constantly shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear when driving around town about 35-45mph. Also when i take off from a dead stop and put the gas to the floor transmission shifts great until i go from 3rd to 4th it goes into like a neutral position and will not shift at high rpm when it should unless i slightly let of gas and lower rpm? There is no grinding or noises and shifts in gear smoothly. I cant figure it out? Thanx for the help...

The overdrive and torque converter lockup are affected in this recently rebuilt AT behind a 5.9 Cummins. At 75 MPH, the tack should read 2100 RPM with the Cummins Diesel and stock height tires. Without warning, on flat ground in cruise control, the transmission will disengage. The highest speed that can be maintained is around 50 MPH unless the accelerator is released and allow the transmission to hook up again. The strange thing is, that the next time it is driven, it engages the overdrive and the torque converter lockup and pulls strong all day. NOTE: The transmision temperature will not indicate when this occurs. I believe it is in the PCM, but the dealership service department says, "No."

Ummm i would say you need to adjust your trans shift cable, check your fluid level, and the problem i had with my dodge was similar to yours... it was my 3rd-4th actuator spring, it had broke and couldnt hold the pressure to keep it in gear

Purchase a gear shift repair kit for your car. They are pretty cheap. About 20 bucs. The ball and bushings are probably worn.

SOURCE: 02 jeep liberty won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear.

Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.

SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2

check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 sport 4x4 and the transmission slips between first and second gear, I have replaced the filter and fluid and am still experiencing the slip, what could be the cause?

Most important is making sure the trans is full, especially after doing a
trans service, since the torque convertor needs to be under a load when filling it, to completely be full. If you had the vehicle running and shifted
it through the gears while filling it up with tranny fluid, your good, but if
not, check it again.

Take a look at the down shift cable and make sure its not broken especially were it connects to the throttle linkage. And maybe try cleaning the electrical plug that plugs into the trans. Its about a 7 to 9 wire plug. They tend to collect water and short the wiring out.
