Question about 1996 Ford Contour

1 Answer

Wiring problem I replaced the alternator today and I am still having a problem. The mechanic said that there is a problem in the "black distribution box" beside the battery. Should I replace the entire wire harness? There is obviously wiring problems with this car. I had to have the wires recovered because they corroded from the battery acid dripping on them. The next thing to go was the alternator. These are the only two problems that I have had with this car. All in all it is a great car. Please help Thanks

Starter, alternator wiring diagram

Would need to post year make and model for a diagtam. In all probability when the battery got shorted out by the pulley it damaged the voltage regulator inside the alternator. Make sure all your connections are clean and tight.

Engine dragging when starting now won't start at all

Most likely something to do with the starter or the wiring associated with it. (possible bad ground). Get it up on a lift and look at the wiring coming from the starter and tracing it to the harness. Make sure all insulation is in good shape, no exposed wiring. Check your grounds. The starter itself could have an issue also.

Polarity was reversed when jump starting vehicle installed new battery & no power to anything mechanic said fuse got blown. What fuse, where it is located & cost of it.

Hard to say without make, year, and model-but check all fuses in the power distribution box under the hood- ignition, alternator fuse, etc.-all of them, the small ones and the maxi-fuses. All fuses are pretty cheap. If you still have nothing, you may need a wiring diagram to check for fusible links that would be power distributors right off or near the battery. Fusible links work much like a fuse, and most have been replaced by maxi-fuses, but many vehicles have both. If there is a designated main fuse, it should be in the distribution block or box under the hood.

Although my husband replaced the alternator today, it still doesn't seem to be charging and only registers about 11 on the gauge.

Check all bigger fuses under hood in power distribution box, may have blown one for alternator or charge circuit when changing.

Check all battery connections, wiring at alternator, for scorched ends, loose and/or corroded connections, as well as any power distribution boxes under hood. take close look at belt(s) for scorched or burnt edges, or deep grooves, as sign of trouble.Personally if I didn't find anything obvious, I would remove belt (s) and try moving all pulleys & idlers by hand, and feel for binding etc. When that's done, if you must, have someone start & be ready to shut it down quickly, as you observe pulleys, belts etc.

Alternator will not work properly

you might have them check and se that you are getting the right could also be because of the battery not pushing enough volts back to the alternator that is keeping the reading off. have the battery tested and see if you have a dead cell or low reading on it
