Question about 1992 Dodge Colt

2 Answers

Failed e-test My 1992 colt failed it's e-test. The NOx was way too high. The car runs good, except it chugs a little at the 80 km mark. I've changed the distributor/rotor cap, spark plugs, fuel and air filters and spark plug wires. i think i'll change the O2 sensor. Any suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the canadian 1992 colt 200E doesn't have an EGR valve. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

O2 sensor helped me but not enough to pass. Loosen your distributor bolts, one on each side, turn your distributor counter clock wise about 1/4 inch and tighten bolts. This will raise your CO but should reduce the NOX. When the vehicle is passed, undo the changes.

Check your EGR valve for blocked ports and proper operation. The EGR is what lowers your NOx emissions.

Exhaust has high hydrocarbon and high NOx output.what is the most likely problem/solution?

High NOX is an indication that your Catalytic Converter needs to be replaced. The hydrocarbons or unburnt fuel are dealt with in the Cat as well.If you do a lot of short in town trips they tend to clog up faster but at eight years old its not uncommon. What I would do is have a "tune up" done or do it yourself, replace the air filter,do an oil change, and replace the cat. Fill up with a higher octane gas and go for a good run( get the engine good and hot) to clear it out and just before your next test take out the air filter in the parking lot and put it back in after the test. The above has worked for me several times. Good luck

High nox fail smog test any remedies? 99

NOX is created when the internal combustion temperature gets to high. The egr system uses burnt exhaust gases to line to cylinder walls. The purpose of this is decrease internal combustion temperature therefore reducing the amount of NOX created.Would look to a possible egr malfunction usually they will trigger the check engine light but not always. The 4.3L has been known to have issues with carbon buil up in the egr and the egr pintle not open and closing properly.

1992 dodge stealth failed smog test with high NOx reading at idle. passed perfect at high rpm , failed at idle. hat causes a high NOx reading?

NOX is produced when cylinder temperatures exceed 2500 f.
Your vehicle has 2 ways to directly reduce NOX, EGR system, and catalytic converter, and also the cooling system indirectly.
Take a look at the EGR system, vacuum lines, pipes, and make sure the diaphragm moves. Disconnect the vacuum line, then push on the diaphragm and plug the hole (from vacuum line) when you release the diaphragm there should be vacuum. Also you may want to take it out and give the EGR passages and EGR valve a good cleaning, with some type of carbon cleaner like carb cleaner.

My 1992 Cutlass Supreme SL Olds failed emissions.

High NOX readings indicate a somewhat lean condition IE: hot exhaust. Possible causes are cracked and leaking vacuum lines or lazy oxygen sensors. If possible have a reputable garage with engine electronics scanner services check the sensor to see if its helping to create the lean condition

Failed smog

We had to have the calatic converter replaced. We did this after doing an oil change, air filter change, and new spark plugs and still hadn't passed smog. After changing the calatic converter it passed smog with scores of 25.
