Question about 1990 Volvo 740

1990 Volvo 740 Turbos wagon

At first it would run and shut off when it got to running temperature. Now it starts at times and other times it wont start at all. But when it does start it quits right at or right before it hits the running temerature. After it cools off it will go until it gets back at the running temperature and quits again.

I have the same issue. Its cold here now-....35 degrees F and I start the car(a had to give a booster shot of ether..I usually do when the car is not run in a month or two and its cold), after I start, I drive for 10 min, maybe enough time to reach operation temp and then wham, the who;le thing shuts down like I just turnes the key off. I wait for 10 min and it will start but only run for 1-2 minutes. I will try to start again after the engine completely cools (4-5 hours) then I will see how long it stays running. If it runs for longer than 2 minutes then I think some sort of opeerating temp fault or sensor is coming in to play. What do you think?

Maybe bad Power Stage/Inquiry:driving down the highway at @ 60mph with 1/4 tank of gas in 100 degree temp inwell kept 84 760 Turbo; car just dies, engine turns over but will notstart] [Response:] Well, when my '84 760 Turbo died for no apparentreason as you describe, it was in the freezing dark, going over Donner Pass.Everything on the car worked except no spark and the engine wouldn't run. It turned out to be the ignition module, which is mounted on the inner driver'sside fender well, above the battery, close to where someone else mentioned theballast resistor was located. It's easy to get to and replace. Ifthat turns out to be the culprit, shop around before buying the new part. Volvo dealers charge several hundred $$$ for this thing, but I found one froman independent parts distributor for about $90 - the identical part madeby BOSCH with the same part number on it.

My friend has a 1988 Volve 740 GLE that has problems starting from time to time. She had someone change the fuel pump but it still does the same thing. She now says when the car is running and she turns on...

Hi,
That sounds like an ECU problem.
Better bring that Volvo to the nearest dealer and have them scan your computer for any anomalies in the system.
Hope FixYa solved that problem.

'90 Volvo 740 2.3l turbo water pump install instructons needed

Go to an auto supply store like PEP boys or Advance Auto, etc., and buy a Haynes Repair Manual for the 740. You may be able to consult one at your local library for free. Even if it doesn't cover your model year, the replacement instructions are pretty much the same for all years. in fact even a 240 Volvo manual would be essentially the same. Pay particular attention to the installation instructions....you have to slide the pump on, and then rotate it a few degrees clockwise to make the upper o-ring seal. Good luck!

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

not really any special tools vill be required.  You will need access to the underside of the car.  And the parts are really expensive.

I had a 87 740 turbo wagon, It ran a 10.9 1/4 mile man was it fun. I hate to say that your turbo is nearing the end of its life. The only thing you can do is replace it. there are speciality shops that specilize in turbos. if you can't find one close check out a Diesel truck shop, they deal in turbos too. maybe you can have it rebuilt a little cheaper, or I can tell you how make it pass a Corvette. Good luck.
