Question about 1999 Volkswagen Passat

2 Answers

Leaking shell My Passat has developed a leak where the water gathers behind the drivers seat in the passenger footwell. It's a large amount but obviously depends on the amount of rain. I have been told this could be a problem with the bulkhead?? any ideas on how to fix this problem

I had exactly the same problem about three years a go on a 96 passat (just before the model change).

It turned out to be the grommet where the bonnet release cable goes through the bulkhead had pulled out. I pushed it back in and plastered a silicone sealer over it and it has been fine since.

However, a couple of months ago, I noticed that the inside of the car was very damp again. The carpets and foamy stuff have all been taken out. This time, it was just the drivers footwell that was sopping wet. The grommet around the bonnet release cable is still in place. I've dried it all out and we've had a couple of torrential rainstorms since then, but no water has come into the car so I'm stumped.

I had the same problem, mine was the pollen filter drains were plugged backing up into the car, mine then shorted out the ccm which is on the floor on the left hand side, cost me 100's. Find the source of the leak soon as all electronics are under the drivers seat. Great design huh?

Leaking water

Have you had front or rear glass changed? Is there rust around windshield or rear glass? Have someone run water hose over upper glass...while someone inside car inspects for water trail. Hope this helps.

Passenger footwell wet

Hi there?
There are 2 things that can cause that. At the botom of the windscreen under the cover next to the brake servo, there is a hole for the rain water to escape. Make sure this is not blocked, because the water will gather up and enter through the pollen filter inside the car.
Second thing that could be is the heater metrix which is located behind the dashbard. check if the engine water level is not low. If it is then it's a good possibility that the heater may be leaking.

Water on back seat floor

It could be caused by blocked sunroof drains. Thats where I'd look first.
Good luck!

Pool of water in footwell behind drivers seat.

Is the water only in footwell behind driver seat? If yes, then have you checked the weather stripping around rear door (assuming that it is 4 doors)? My brother had the same problem, and behold it was the stripping around the door. If you find that is the cause, standard household weather stripping added to door frame will work well.

Seat Alhambra 1996 1.9L water leak drivers footwell

the water can travel along surfaces or beams in the car so you cannot tell where it is actually leaking. in my ford windstar water leaked in right over the fuse box. it ran along a cross beam from the passenger side. if it has those plastic strips they use to go in between small gaps in the metal... like along the roof where the roof is and the metal of the sides joins it is likely they are leaking. best to take a garden hose and have someone inside the car with a flashlight on the floor looking for leaks
