Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

Catalytic converter failure

What type of symptoms occur when your catalytic converter is failing? Mine idle's poorly, occasionally surges, the check engine light is on. We have replaced all of the oxygen sensors, tuned it up, replaced the fuel filter, I could go on and on about everything we've replaced.

Check for the catalytic converter being plugged up. The powertrain is actually from GM, and it uses TBI. A plugged catalytic converter will cause all of your symptoms, and yet not trigger a MIL warning light.

My 2000 ford expedition shakes when i accelerate and the check engine light flashes if i dont let off the gas the rpms will go down then all the way up.Is there something wrong with my trany?

Not your trans. A flashing check engine light means stop immediately sever problem. From your symptoms I think it is a bad ignition coil. Often a failing ignition coil works when idle but fails under load. A failing coil dumps raw gasoline into the catalytic converter resulting in extreme heat and cat failure.

2001 buick century failed emission twice. we had a new catalytic converter put in, new egr valve, egr passage cleaned, new oil pressure sensor and new idle control valve. the check engine light goes off

Depends on where the failure occurs. Is the idle and low speed where it fails or the high rpm? Troubleshooting will be more exact if that is known

95 check s-10 blazer idle is not consistent: almost stalls then idle surges. When gas is applied the engine bucks & misses severely. A friend has suggested it may be the egr valve. What are the...

An EGR that is stuck opencan very well cause the symptom you are decribing, including surging at idle and poor acceleration.

Failure of GM EGR Valves is quite rare.
A common problem on the 4.3L Vortec engines is failure of the Central Multiport Injection Assembly located between the plastic upper intake plenum and the lower intake manifold.

Sometimes failure of injector lines and/or the fuel pressure regulator (Part of the MFI Assembly) will cause fuel to spill into the upper plenum area. This can dislodge carbon deposits in the upper plenum which then get stuck in the EGR Valve and cause the symptoms that you are describing. The EGR Valve can be removed and cleaned. Replacement is not usually necessary.
Ido recommend replacement of the injector assembly however.

P0422 general evap failure i tested gas cap and it failed replaced gas cap and repaired a vac hose to the purge soilniod light comes back on within 10 min of clearing it

P0422 Buick - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem

My 2000 dodge durango failed the emissions due to a bad catalytic converter... The check engine light did not come on. Could there be any other reason why it would fail?

really need more info on your durango ? millage , engine , other causes for poor emissions are weak motors , poor gas , tuneup problems and worn emission parts like lazy O2 sensors and catalytic converters

1988 chevy corsica bogs down when you press the accelerator, some time back fires cold or hot.

Bogging can be caused by several things but the most common is lack of fuel. A plugged fuel filter would be the first check. Next would be a possible fuel pump problem. Also a plugged exhaust will give the same symptom, catalytic converters the prime suspect.
If your car is using excessive oil or has been running poorly for a while will contribute to catalytic failure.

There is one before each catalytic converter (usually up right near the exhaust manifolds), and one after each cat (or if you have a Y-pipe exhaust that brings the two sides together to one pipe and one converter, then there's one after that single converter). Why do you want to change them? Have you gotten failure codes or are you having poor gas mileage? Or have they just been in there a long time? They're usually good for about 60k miles, although of course they can fail early. Usually the symptoms are poor fuel economy, running rich (seen by black smoke out the tailpipes and some rough idling, as well as blackened spark plugs), or fault codes dealing with system-lean or system-rich descriptions. Those symptoms are indicative of bad primary O2 sensors (the ones closest to the engine). If your secondary sensor(s) are failing (the post-cat sensor or sensors) you'll trip a check-engine light warning you of poor catalytic converter efficiency.
