Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf

My Golf won't turn-over, I'M IN DISPAIR!!!

I have a VW golf (99 's') was driving fine, apart from cutting out all the time, which it seems all Golf drivers suffer from... , went out one night, i sat waiting for my wife, the ignition was off but i had the radio on for about half an hour, went to start the thing, and it wouldn't turn over.... I bumped started it and it started straight away, the battery is fine, not long replaced it... all the lights come on, but when i turn the key..NADA... funny thing tho,,.. the reverse lights come on now when I turn the key!!! ive checked what i can.. battery, trigger wire to the starter motor, plugs, cap.. all the fuses.. but still no joy...she's now what i call FUBAR'd (**** up beyond all repair!!)... please can someone help!!! its a good little car, but now its sitting on my driveway looking all sorry for itself...

thanks vagman, i renewed the starter motor, got a used but fairly new one from a Bora, only £40, and it started on the button, as for the cutting out 'all the time' problem, well someone told me 'maf' or 'map' sensor, someone told me 'throttle housing', me, i changed the spark plugs, and she now runs like a new car, my other half, her indoors... is as chuffed as a chuffed out chuffing steam train... YEAHAHHhhhh...

If the vehicle runs smoothly idling (at least 30 mins in Park) I would head directly to the ignition switch, then battery wiring harness.

2000 VW golf horn won't work, fuse is good , relay 53 is good but changed it anyway. No voltage reading at horns. Tested horn off car and it is fine

Did you check the power to the relay? and then the signal wire (ground) at the relay to see if it's being signaled? Otherwise you may have a clockspring or module problem not allowing the signal to pass through to the relay.

VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle. once clutch is pressed sound goes. car drives fine with no noise in 1st-4th gears. unable to select 5th gear.. just grinds and wont engage. VW Golf...

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.
