Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

2002 Mitsu. Galant no power until ignition is on

Basically nothing. including headlights and 4-ways, works until key is in run position. Then everything seems to work, there is an ocasional feeling that the car is going to stop running.
This started with the remote entry not working and now includes almost every circut, the owner is some miles from me and asked for help.
This car was working fine until Wed. afternoon. That's when the owner told me that the remote had quit working. By the time she called me she was starting to notice other problems.
I have two maybes, ignition switch and or combo switch. Of course it could be some really wild grounding problem.

This is more than likely an ignition switch problem

1987 toyota pickup lost all electrical except headlights

What works? Just headlights? Does anything electrical work that does not need the ignition switch to be in the on position? Possibly four way flashers, brake lights, horn, interior light, dash lights in instrument panel as well as headlights should all work without the key in the ignition and in the acc or on position. If this is what you have, then I would say you need to replace the ignition switch.
Hope this helps.

Dim lights

I had the exact same problem. Everything checked out ok at the garage including the earths. Finally we discovered that it is very easy to push the bulbs in in the wrong position and they will work but they are too dim. There is only one way that they are supposed to fit in, as soon as we got them slotted in correctly - bingo, dazzling headlights!

Tilt the steering wheel down all the way and see if it starts, if it does then there is a main power wire loose in the steering columb. Thats all which comes to my mind at this time.

My scurity light on and car won't start whst

Most GM vehicles have an antitheft system build in. The 2001 Monte Carlo is one of these cars. This system is called Passlock. It basically works like this. Along with the key and everything that a key normally does, these keys are special and have a transponder embedded in them. This communicates a signal to your ignition/lock cylinder via radio waves. This then communicates that signal to the TDM (Theft Deterrent Module) which then ALLOWS the starter to start or injector to pulse. So basically if any parts of this system are compromised, broken, or failing, your car will refuse to start or run, most everything else in the car will seem to work fine, and a light that says SECURITY will illuminate on the dash or instrument panel. You have 3 options. Take your car to a dealer and let them charge you for whatever they feel like, start changing out parts until you find the failed one, or just bypass the entire system so this can never happen again. The bypass is the best way to go in my opinion. I've installed dozens of these and never had one fail or had the problem reoccur. Take a look at this link. It is full of info on the GM security systems, pictures to help understand the problem, and a few links to help you find a bypass suitable for your vehicle
