I have a 2004 chevrolet malibu. I hear a single knock when I turn my steering wheel. Not everytime, but enough that I noticed. Some one told me it could be steering universal joints. Is that possible or could it be my steering column or tire support?
Hi gwilson566. It sounds like the same problem I had with the malibu. If it's the same thing, then it will only get worse and possibly dangerous. What happened was the front top-shocks were finished, not letting the suspension turn properly when turning the wheel. That seemed to put stress on the front springs, which in turn both cracked. That then put more stress on the front shocks. I noticed that the front end was lower than usual. The sound was at first a knocking sound/popping. Then it progressed to knocking/popping/grinding. After a short time, all this happened over about two weeks, when hitting bumps you would get some awful sounds from the front end. If it's the same, you may just need the top-shocks replaced, if it's just starting. If you wait too long, like me, then you may have to replace the top-shocks, springs and shocks. Get on it right away. It may save you some $$$. Hope this helps.

I have a 2002 Chevy Malibu and I have the same knocking sound coming for the passager rear side. I have fixed the brakes, roter, bearings, etc. But every month or so it starts up again.
