Dash says the steering lock has malfunctioned, car starts but shuts right off. If I re aling th ewheel or insert th ekey and wait a few seconds before I start the car, it will fire up.

I can not predict when it will happen.

Push in key, car won't start and red power steering assistant light comes on, on dash. Wait 5 minutes and car starts fine.

I try to start the car, it turns over but then shuts down. I have to wait 2 or 3 minutes and then it starts right up.

Car starts fine but engine dies right away. Had battery and alternator checked and both are fine. Just started to happen for me. Intermittent.

  • gdoolittle May 21, 2009

i push the key in, car starts for one second, and then dies. the only
hack to make it work seems to be waiting for an arbitrary amount of
time, then starting it again. if it doesn't start i just have to wait
longer and eventually it will start.

i took it to the dealer and they said i have to get a new steering
column in order to fix this problem ($1800!!!!!). i bought this car new less than
three years ago, and i would not recommend buying a volkswagen to
anyone. lots of very disappointing and expensive problems with this car.

I tried the following and it works for me like a charm I push the key gadget in halfway, wait for the first light on left to go out and then push it in slightly further until all lights and bells are silent and then I push it in the whole way and it starts right up. I am not getting VW to replace this to the tune of $1800.....this fix works just fine!

Key wont turn in ignition

Often this is caused by steering wheel interlock. Try turning wheel a little back and forth while trying to turn key to see if key now turns. Some cars require stepping ******* brake pedal and if the switch at the pedal has failed or become dislodged this can happen.

When I turned it off, I forgot to put the shift into P. It started rolling, so I shifted it then. When I tried to start the car a little later, the steering column was locked. Usually, you push in the key,...

Leave it in park and try to roll the car back slightly while turning the key and jerk on the wheel. Feel free to manhandle the wheel, it can take it.

2004 Toyota highlander steering wheel is locked but turned halfway, key wont turn and wheels are straight

there is a load on the lock pin in the steering column try turning the steering wheel a bit left or right to release the pin as you try turning the key.
Steering wheel locks never lock straight ahead as the idea is that if the car is being stolen it will turn a circle rather that move straight

Unable to turn the key in ignition...a little play in steering wheel, but key refuses to turn

Trying smacking the shifter hard to the park position which it is already. There is a lock that stops the ignition from unlocking if the gear selector not getting into the P position all the way.

Ignition ley got locked. ket wont turn

I have an 2002 Escape. I can think of three possible issues:
You're using the wrong key. Duh.
You have a bad ignition switch. Extremely unlikely.
Your steering wheel is pushing against the steering lock. I just went out to my Escape to confirm this on mine. This happens sometimes if you park against a curb, or parking block. The steering wheel is pushed against the lock pin, and the key can not be turned.
Trying turning the sterring wheel back and forth. There should be some play or shake. If no play, turn the steering wheel a little harder in either direction until it moves a little, hold it, and try the key.

For the disbelievers, this can happen on most cars. Go to your car and hold some pressure on turning the steering wheel. Try turning your key from off to start.

Ignition switch would start but would not lock into position (RUN) and would shut off and then ignition completely locked down and will not move

The ignition key cylinder in a Buick unlocks the ignition and allows the Buick's engine to start. The cylinder contains a switch on the end of it (inside the cylinder) that sends an electric signal to the starter motor. When the ignition key cylinder fails, the Buick won't start. When this happens, you'll need a new ignition cylinder. Purchase replacement cylinders from Buick.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need:

  • Ignition key
  • Punch pin
  • Cross-point screwdriver
  1. 1 Remove the screws on the bottom of the steering column on your Buick. These screws hold the steering column cover on. You may need to tilt the steering wheel to its highest position to access these screws.
  2. 2 Turn the ignition key to the "II" position in the ignition cylinder.
  3. 3 Slide the punch pin into the access slot on the bottom of the ignition cylinder.
  4. 4 Push the pin all the way into the access slot while you pull the ignition cylinder out of the steering column.
  5. 5 Insert the new ignition cylinder into the steering column with the key in the "II" position on the cylinder.
  6. 6 Push the cylinder into the column until it "clicks," indicating that it is locked into the column.
  7. 7 Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position.

The steering column sounds locked. Try turning the steering wheel all the way left or right till you hear it unlock or until the key can turn. Note; You must use force to unlock the steering column and don't be scared because it won't break anything.
