Question about Toyota Corolla

2 Answers

1999 Toyota Corolla CE. For about 2 months, the engine does not start immediately. I need to turn the ignition key several times until it starts. Each time when I turn the key, a clicking sound happens instead of starting. Today, the first time, when it started the engine made a roaring sound and it sounded like the starter was continuing firing. When I tried to turn the ignition off, the engine did not stop running. Even after I removed the key from the ignition switch, the engine did not stop. So, I finally disconnected the battery cable from the battery. Battery is full charged. Fuel tank is full. Please let me know if the ignition key has a problem and I need to replace the switch.

This is exactly the same thing my 1999 corolla does. It will start after several tries.I may go several days with no problems, then it will do the same thing again.Mechanic can not find the problem.

Mine has only done the clicking instead of starting twice, about 1 month ago. Then today it did the loud roaring noise that continued after I turned off the car. After starting and turning it off 2 more times it stopped without me having to disconnect the battery like the first post. I have done research and talked with a friend that is a mechanic. Seems to be the starter solenoid. Basically the starter and relay aren't connecting properly.

Toyota Corolla 1999 - won't start when cold for the last month, have to make several attempts before it starts, got new battery, worked for two weeks, then the same thing. This morning after several attempts to start, it started but made a terrible noise, made it to the shopping center, then after turning the ignition off the motor kept on running. I'm afraid to start it again and drive it. HELP

I hear a single "click" when I turn the ignition to start the car. It usually starts if I remove the key from the ignition and then turn the ignition once more. On some occasions, I can hear that the starter stays engaged and it (and the engine) will continue to run even after I turn off the ignition and remove the key.

I had the same problem with my 99 corolla. It was the solenoid contacts in the starter...they were worn down and didn't either get enough contact or sometimes kind of melt togther (that's why starter spins even after you turn off car and key). Got new contacts and car starts like new!

It sounds like either your having a short at the starter or the ignition switch is bad, I am leaning towards the issue being the starter, usually when the ignition switch is going bad there will be no click,

To reset the system. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position with the odometer reading shown. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position while holding down the trip meter reset knob. Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds. The odometer indicates "000000" and the light goes off. If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.

I have to set ignition time but don't now how to

Turn the engine BY HAND until you see the intake valve open and the exhaust valve is closed. Put a long screwdriver in the spark plug hole and continue turning the engine until the piston is at its highest point. (the screwdriver will go up) If you keep turning the engine (Dont use the starter!!) the screwdriver will start to go down... turn it back until it is at its highest point. that will be TDC

1999 Corolla CE ~150k miles...When attempting to start the car, only in very cold temperatures (T<50*F), the engine has difficulty turning over and will start with a loud unidentifiable engine noise. ...

the car doesnt come with a timing belt, it has a 10 year worry free, internal timing chain, but it sounds like either your battery or starter, cold weather causes the electric flow to slow down, take your battery in to see if its ok, then check your starter. good luck and hope this helps

1999 toyota corolla. Car would not shut off went

I assume the car is a petrol! to stop a petrol engine the ignition needs to be shut down! if there is over run happening there are a few reasons for this. There is a problem with ignition mudule! spark plugs coked up! or the cylinders are coked.
If the car is a Diesel model then the reason for this happening is the shut off valve on the fuel pump is at fault.

Hope this helps.

Engine won't start immediately, needs multiple key turns

I would take off your starter and take it to Autozone or somewhere else that will check it for free. It sounds like you may have a solenoid gone bad. If you dont want to that just goto a Junkyard and get you a starter and swap them and be done with it. Good luck to you,

SIncerely,

JC
