Question about 1997 Mercury Sable

Break light and odd noise,

I really have two issues.
1-after stopping when I start to go forward the red brake light with a (looks like) I P above it will flash on for a second then go off -I seem to have lost my car book and I have no idea what the light means now, can someone look in the book and let me know

2-when I get to 40mph the car noise goes up quite a bit, but levels out again when I go above 40 also the noise gets higher again around 60mph why is this...does it have anything to do with the tranmission(car does not shake and still rides smooth at all speeds) or is it maybe an engine problem in the works?

For problem #1 the sable has a sensor inside the cylinder(called fluid level indicator) to activate the brake light when the fluid level is low. in the 96 Sable, mercury had a recall for these cars regarding the brake light not functioning right
On problem 2, you did not specify if the noise came from the wheel area or directly under the car.

Could be an axle going bad, an improperly installed brake part or an issue with a tire or something in your tire. Somethings can not be diagnosed over the internet so if all these areas have been addressed and you cannot find anything you might want to find a mechanic you trust.

Blinker/Tail Light Issue

The Bulbs Have 2 filliments in them if 1 is burnt out that would give you the fast not working tail light there may be an issue with the brake light switch located above the brake pedal on the arm.

The third brake light is the brake light in the center of the vehicle either around the lower part of the rear window or above the rear window. They didn't start to become common until the late 80’s - early 90's. It is also known as the high mount brake light or the cyclops break light? If that's not what you where looking for let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Thank you for using

I have a 1988 c1500 chevy truck and my break lights stop working and notice the stop light fuse was missing just bought truck back from previous owner but when I replace the fuse the break light stays on...

The brake light switch on these trucks was a poor design. Its mounted on the brake pedal. Look under there and bend the bracket that holds the brake light switch slightly and things will start working again. When these were new we used to just grab the brake pedal and pull it toward the drivers seat really hard and let go. This fixed your problem 99% of the time.

My break lights won't work. thought it was a fuse

look up above your brake pedal and you should see a switch that should look like a rectangle. Odds are this switch is broken and it is what tells your brake lights to come on when it depresses.

Truck strains to move forward when starting from a stop.

Glad to help. Check those brake linings for any signs of burning...If they have been running too tight it is possible that they have overheated a bit. Also check the emergency brake cable for binding sometimes they get rusted up and stick.
