I assume this is an automatic transmission? (Otherwise, you control the shifting...)

Your transmission gears might be worn. You should take it to a reputable mechanic.

My Pontiac Gran Prix is stuck in third gear, why?

check tranny fluid. if thats good then it sounds like your bands are sticking. go to autozone and buy a bottle of "lucas tranmission additive". this is the best on the market. do not buy the cheap stuff. this "lucas transmission additive" will be rather thick so it will take about 10 minutes to drain into your transmission filler port. drive around for aboud 10-15 minutes and you should be fixed......tell me if this fixes your problem.

My tranmission works in reverse, Ist and second. Will not move in 3rd or OD. Tranmission hot light came on. Immediately shut off vehicle. Manual says transmission will return to normal shifting patterns...

sounds like your third and forth clutches are burnt up. one set of clutches powers both gears. transmission will most likely need to be overhauled
