Hi the trick with this engine is early oil and oil filter changes to minimise chain wear as they
tend to get very noisey around the 80k mark and often fail before 90k destroying the valves and
pulling off the bottom chain sprocket that is only pressed on to the crankshaft so thats no good either my advise is to run it to 70k if you have to and get something else before it self destructs
Honda element has a Timing Chain, and Honda doesn't even recommending looking at it till something like 110,000 or 120,000 miles.
However, it is this an "interference" engine, meaning that if the chain or belt fails it could destroy the valve train and even the pistons. Because it is an interference engine. I plan to change my chain at 100K, since I expect the car to go at least 200K but don't expect the chain to last that long. Normally cars has Tune ups scheduled at 30K, 60, and 90K. As the rule of the thumb at 90K Tune up mechanic shops recommend timing Belt or Chain to be replaced. We can go for longer taking the risk.
It has a timing belt. Recommended to be replace every 105,000 miles, timing belt also run's your water pump good idea to also replace, your engine is also an INTERFERENCE ENGINE which will damage your cylinder head valve's if timing belt goes bad. Hope this was very helpful.
Honda reccomends timing belt change at 100k. Most Honda dealers like you to change the belt at 90,000 miles (90k). some auto repair places will want to change the belt at 60k but that is not necessary (Note: if in a severe cold or hot climate like florida or canada you would change the belt before 90k or if the belt is over 7 years old.. Yes those vehicles have timing belts instead of chains. I have yet to see a timing belt that doesnt need to be changed at some point. Maybe the tech meant you didnt need to change them now. Each manufacturer has their own mileage interval, but generally speaking, anywhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles they are due to be replaced.
