You will need to back off on the lock nut on the tie rod end then remove the tie rod end from spindle turn tie rod counting the number of turns to take it off put new tie rod the same number of turns put back in spindle and tighten lock nut your steering wheel will probably be off center so you will need to have the toe reset on the alignment machine

Most of the time when you are not able to get inner tie rod ends it's because you would have to replace the rack and pinion assy. to take care of the inner tie rod issue.

Procedure on replacing the inner tie rod ends:


1) Raise and safely support the vehicle.

2) Remove the front wheel/tire assembly.

3) Clean the steering rod between the steering boot and outer tie rod end lock nut with a suitable penetrating lubricant and a clean cloth or shop towel.

4) Loosen the outer tie rod end locking nut 1/8 turn.

5) Loosen the steering boot clamp(s), and slide the small clamp off the boot.

6) Carefully loosen the boot and slide outward off the steering rack and onto the shaft to expose the inner steering rod mounting fastener.

7) If necessary, position the inner steering rack shaft in or out to allow for additional access.

8) Relieve the steering rod nut locking tab from the inner steering rack shaft, then loosen the steering rod ball socket nut 1 turn.

9) Matchmark the tie rod end to the threaded shaft.

10) Remove the cotter key and castle nut from the outer tie rod end threaded spindle, and using a tie rod end removal tool, remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle.

11) Hold the tie rod with a wrench, and remove the outer tie rod end from the threaded rod, counting the number of complete turns it takes to remove the tie rod end from the shaft. Write the number of turns on a piece of note paper.

12) Remove the tie rod end lock nut from the threaded steering shaft.

13) Slide the steering rack boot off the shaft.

14) Remove the inner steering rod ball socket nut from the inner steering rack shaft.

To install:

1) Inspect the tie rod end for looseness, and the steering rack boot and tie rod end boot for cracks deterioration or damage and replace as necessary.

2) Clean steering rack shaft and apply a light coating of Genuine Honda Power steering fluid as necessary.

3) Apply a medium strength locking agent to the threads where the inner steering rod ball socket mounts. Use a new locking washer and a new stop washer, and install the inner tie rod onto the steering rack shaft.

4) Tighten the inner tie rod end fastener by 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)

5) Peen the lock washer over the nut or onto the flat surface of the steering rack shaft.

6) Apply silicone grease to the outer circumference of the inner tie rod end ball socket, and onto the groove just outside of the socket.

7) Apply silicone grease to the inside of the small end of the steering rack boot, and slide the boot over the steering shaft and onto the rack and install the boot clamps. If the boot has air hose fittings make sure they are installed as removed.

8) Apply a light film of an anti-seize compound onto the threaded tie rod end, and install the tie rod end lock nut.

9) Install the tie rod end onto the tie rod, turning it in exactly the number of turns it took to remove it.

10) Install the tie rod end following the tie rod end installation procedure.

11) The balance of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

12) Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.

if its the outer tie rod than loosen the jam nut on the threaded part of the inner tie rod. You will then be able to unthread the outer tie rod from the inner. Count the number of turns and install the new one with the same number of turns.

If its the inner tie rod you will need an inner tie rode remover/installer tool and a torque wrench.

You need an inner tie rod tool!!!!!
Run down to auto-zone and rent one. It's like jumbo deep socket.

When you take off the outer tie-rod make sure you count exactly how many revolutions to take it off, then when you put it back juts recount the revolutions and get it exactly the same. You shouldn't need to get another alignment. The tool you can rent at autozone, it's like a long wrench that has just a plain square box at the end you put in this rod thing that the tool comes with and it reaches the inner tie-rod. You will need to take off part number 25's jam nut first as it holds the inner tie-rod against the outer tie-rod. There is a boot that covers up the inner tie-rod end too you will need to grease up that boot really good before putting it back over the inner tie-rod. There is a ring around both ends of the boot, you will need either a ring separator or just pry it off and when putting the boot back just put a zip tie around each end tight, that's what I did cause i didn't have a ring separator. Also, there is a chance if you have an old oem one that the tool can't get to it so you can turn the wheel to move it out so you have more room. Mine was stripped so I had to use some vice grips to get it off. There's also a ring on the inside of the boot at a hose fitting, the other side of the hose goes to the other inner tie-rod on the other side so that when you turn the wheel air moves freely between both tie-rods.

Need to replace inner tie rod on a 1998 ford ranger two wheel drive , driver side . engine size is 2.5. do i have to take outer tie rod off as well?


webbraymond2, Yes, you have to remove the outer tie to access the inner tie rod. When you do this, count the rotations of the tie rod as this will have to be replaced when the new inner tie rod is installed. Counting the rotations will allow you to put the outer tie rod close to where it was when you started the job. You are changing the toe setting when you have to replace either the inner or outer tie rod. You need to access and remove the jamb nut and boot before you can access the inner tie rod and this is why the outer needs to be removed first. A wheel alignment is advised after you finish the job. How to install inner and outer tie rods on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica - I waqs told buy a trusted local mechanic that I need to replace 3 of the 4 tie rods. Might as as well replace all 4, but how hard is it...


You will need to rent or borrow in inner tie rod tool but here are the directions.
1. Break the jam nut on inner tie rod to outer loose.
2. Remove nut from outer tie rod attaching it to steering knuckle.
3. Use hammer to get tie rod out of knuckle.
4. Unscrew outer tie rod then jam nut
5. Remove clamp from boot and slide off inner tie rod.
6. Using side cutter or hammer and chisel break off metal clamp on the inside of inner tie rod boot.
7. Using inner tie rod tool, unscrew inner tie rod from rack and pinion
8. Reinstall parts and have it aligned

Can i replace a tie rod {inner} on a 94 ford mustang , drivers side without taking off rack and pinion. I need to get a roll pin off the inner tie rod and thats the problem it looks pressed in not set...


Real simple, assuming you know how to take the outer tie rods off. You have to take the clip that holds the plastic boot on off, then slide back the plastic boot, and you'll be able to unscrew the whole inner tie rod assembly. The hardest part of the whole process is installing the new ones to the exact settings of the old ones

Am changing the inner tie rod on a 2000 cirrus with a 2.5 and cant figure out how to get old one off


to get the inner tie rod out you need an inner tie rod tool, it's a long tube that fits a 1/2 inch drive rachet and there's different size adaptors that go into the end of it to fit over the tie rod, find the right size put into tool, put over tie rod and brake it loose, reverse for installtion.

Tie rod broke and I am trying to remove the old one but can't figure it out. I have removed the nut from the outer tie rod but it still does not come off the tire. The inner tie rod I have no idea how to...


The tie rod close to the tire. Your have to get a pitch fork and a hammer.
If you don't have a pitch fork,
Then hit the spindle to make that outter tie rod end drop down.
make sure the bolt is remove.
Little hammer is not going to work you will need like a 32oz .
Once you have it loosing you will have to go counter-clock wise turn to remove the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod, Remember count the turn very important to install it back. for you Toe Alignment.


The inner tie rod end will you will need a tool call tie rod end removal & install. It's a long tube with specail clip to removal & install.
Maybe you can rent it. Or buy it habor freight tools or something.

How difficult to replace inner tie rod end on 06 silverado 2wd?


Not that hard, just spray the tie rod sleeve with WD40 night before and let it soak in. Remove the collier pin and and nut and hammer the old inner tie rod end out of the Track rod with a 5 pound sledge hammer. Remove the inner tie rod end from the sleeve and don't forget to mark the distance so you can place the new tie rod end at the same length. Reinstall the inner tie rod end to the Track rod and tighten the nut and replace the collier pin with a new one. Grease the fitting and go for a test drive, if the truck does not wonder then your good to go with out a alignment. Good luck and hope this helps, Note, make sure you have to right inner tie rod ends. Each side has different thread rotations.

1996 chrysler concorde, how to take off the inner tie rod?


I used this website: http://www.allpar.com/fix/intrepid-steering.html It worked perfectly. To add to it, I used a tie rod puller tool rented from Oreilly Auto Parts for only a few bucks, to press the old bushing out of the inner-tie-rod end. Worked very well. Easier than removing the entire tie rod, and hammering it out. However, removing the entire tie rod would make re-assembly easier. If I did it again, I would strongly consider removing the driver side tie rod from the car, then attaching the inner tie rod end 1st. Meaning, attach the passenger side inner tie rod 1st, then the driver side inner tie rod with new bushing, then re-attach the drivers side outer tie rod. That would probably be the easiest way on this 1996 dodge concorde, due to the fuel line that's in the way....
