Question about 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo

1 Answer

Electrical My 1989 porsche 930 Turbo has a very unique problem. When I shut the engine off, even take out the key, it keeps running. I have only been able to shut engine off by pulling coil wire. Mechanics have been through wiring and replace the delay relay but still no fix. yesterday it was sitting in the parking lot totally turned off then all of sudden the red idiot lights in dash come on and fuel pumps start buzzing, just as if you put the key in and turned ignition on. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have problems with the turbo as thee is a bearing there and you said it starts rattling once the turbo kicks in. There is one other thing, you may have internal engine damage as like you said, only 500 miles and some of that was racing. May not have been broken in properly. I know I was told you need to break an engine in for 500 - 1000 miles then change the oil. I hope this is not the case for you though.

Before anything else is replaced that is not needed, there are 3 things that should be checked first,
throttle position sensor
idle air control valve
fuel bypass valve
I think it's more the idle air control valve, if the valve is not working right the car can't idle cause lack of fuel getting through, but will run with foot on the gas pedal, it just might need a good cleaning, the pintle inside could be sticking. If it's too bad, then it will need to be replaced. Good luck.

Engine starts but shuts down immeditately

1989 Chrysler 2.5 L Turbo has a duel hall effect pick-up in the distributor. It is possible that the pick-up is not working. A "start and stall" indicates that this may be the problem.
Another problem may be the fuel system. Check fuel pressure with key on... should be 40-50 psi on multi-port. 30-40 on TBI
PS If the auto shutdown relay quit then you would not get a start at all. PSS oil pressure will cause a similer problem
