Change the oil with a higher weight oil. I use penzoil 20w50. put a half pint on STP oil treatment in when you change it. Thats the cheapest way to check if you have a problem. it it still does that change the oil pressure sensor/switch. if it still does it you have an expensive problem. the oil pump may be bad or your engine has low compression

i would try a oil prusher gage and see what the oil prusheris for shore.when your engine idel your oil prusher will drop.jeep are not know for haveing bad oil pump. it could be a bad oil pump.good luck

Sounds more like the oil pump... two things... first I wouldn't be driving that vehicle untill it's been fixed....second how many miles on the jeep ?

My 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem. Over heated when standing still. Took it to dealer and they could not find any problem with cooling fan. After doing my own investigation I found out that the electric cooling fan would begin to seize up after about 1hr. of operating. (gets hot)
The dealer would look at fan and see that it was running and think its ok. The problem is, it wasn't running fast enough.
I have a relay on the right side of front fender and jumped the fan to stay on with motor off. (must know what your doing). After about 1hr. fan started slowing way down. Returned it to dealer told them what the problem was. They were not smart enough to jump the relay so they put a couple hundred miles on it even though i told them it works OK when moving. Make sure you tell dealer to use the relay to jump.
Replace cooling fan motor. Works great
SOURCE: 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L oil pressure gauge reading too high
if the gauge starts a 0 - goes to 1/2 , than full - sounds like gauge is OK - seems to me like the sending unit is bad - you could try removing the sender and trying to clean out the port with "brake clean", letting it dry than re-installing it. the pressure switch is still the least expensive place to start

Was the sending unit an aftermarket part?We like to install the original part back into most vehicle, but because of people price shopping, this can cause some issues. If the switch is working properly, the gauge should rise as the engine RPM's increase as you stated. With the key on and the engine off, disconnect the sending unit wire and ground it. The gauge should go to the highest reading, and that checks the wire, and the gauge. I suspect that the sending unit is failed or not the proper one for your vehicle.
