Question about 1991 Jeep Wrangler

When i shift in 4x4 , the light goes on but i don`t have front wheel spin?

I checked the front drive shaft and it is locked , how do i know if it is the vacuum motor or the forks.

    I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM MY 4X4 LIGHT STAYS ON AND WHEN I SHIFT BACK TO REGULAR THE LIGHT DOES NOT GO OFF WHATS THE PROBLEM

You would have to remove the vacuum lines off the motor and see if you got vacuum.

Someone will have to go under and check the linkage is working when the 4 wheel drive is fully engaged and not just moved to a neutral position.

The Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) Front Axle consist of the following components:
• Differential Carrier Housing
• Differential Case Assembly
• Inner Axle Shaft
• Intermediate Shaft Bearing Assembly (located on the right side of the oil pan)
• Electric Motor Actuator
The front axle on Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) model vehicles uses a disconnect feature mounted on the right side of the oil pan in order to engage and disengage the front axle. When the driver engages the 4WD system, the Transfer Case Control Module sends a signal to the electric motor actuator to energize and extend the plunger inside. The extended plunger moves the clutch fork and clutch fork sleeve across from the clutch fork outer gear that is splined to the right side wheel drive shaft to the clutch fork inner gear that is splined to the inner axle shaft. The locking of the two gears allows the axle to operate in the same manner as a semi-floating rear axle. A propeller shaft connects the transfer case to the front axle. The differential carrier assembly uses a conventional ring and pinion gear set to transmit the driving force of the engine to the wheels. The open differential allows the wheels to turn at different rates of speed while the axle continues to transmit the driving force. This prevents tire scuffing when going around corners and premature wear on internal axle parts. The ring and pinion set and the differential are contained within the carrier. The axle identification number is located on top of the differential carrier assembly or on a label on the bottom of the right half of differential carrier assembly. The wheel drive shafts are completely flexible assemblies consisting of inner and outer constant velocity CV joints protected by thermoplastic boots and connected by a wheel drive shaft.

My 97 Grand Cherokee is locked in four wheel drive. How do I get the front axles to disengage


  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Position a drain pan under the shift motor.
  2. Disconnect the vacuum harness. Remove the housing attaching bolts. Remove the housing, motor and shift fork as a unit. Mark the shift fork for installation reference.
  3. Rotate the shift motor and remove the shift fork and motor retaining snaprings. Remove the shift motor from the housing.

  1. Remove the O-ring seal and discard.

To install:
  1. Add 5 oz. of gear lubricant to the axle through the shift motor housing opening.
  2. Install a replacement O-ring seal on the shift motor. Install the motor in the housing with the retaining snaprings and slide the shift fork onto the shaft with the reference marks aligned.
  3. Engage the shift fork with the shift collar and install the attaching bolts. Tighten to 101 inch lbs. (137 Nm).
  4. Connect the vacuum harness, lower the vehicle and road test.

Got. A 2003 f150 4x4 got problems with 4 wheel drive locking in and stay in drive shaft turning front wheels not


Operationally vacuum shifts the front axle between 2WD and 4WD mode. The GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) applies ground to the solenoid needed for the mode selected on the switch ( for ESOF ) or when the transfer case shift lever is moved ( MSOF ).The contact plates in the transfer case signal the GEM that the transfer case is engaged, and the Vacuum solenoids need to be activated ( either 2WD to 4WD or 4WD to 2WD ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem ( this is what you seem to have, the transfer case is engaged and will drive the front shaft mine was a key on engine off test ).

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
•With the truck running ( with front wheel back on the ground ), switch from 2WD to 4WD and back again, the vacuum shift motor should move the lever on the front axle.

-- If the vacuum shift motor does not move:
1.Check for vacuum on the lines while shifting between modes. Pink vacuum line is 2WD mode, Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD.
2.Check the fuses for the 4WD system and the solenoids.
3.Check the vacuum lines from the vacuum shift motor to the solenoids on the firewall.

4.Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids to the vacuum reservoir box behind the battery.
5.Check the vacuum reservoir box for cracks.
6.Typical solution is the vacuum lines ( to the solenoids or to the vacuum shift motor ) are cracked or the vacuum shift motor has a cracked diaphragm and has water in it.
7.Could be the shift plate contacts in the transfer case are corroded / not making good contact, and not activating the solenoids.

Usually the case is cracked vacuum lines from the solenoids, the next common is a cracked vacuum reservoir box, and 1 time I have seen the mount for the vacuum disconnect motor broken ( motor floating free so it could not push against the axle )

The 4x4 is controlled by vacuum. There is a vacuum switch on the top of your transfer case that control the vacuum to the front axle shift motor. The shift motor has 2 ports, when vacuum is applied to one side the shift motor moves the fork one way and when vacuum is applied to the other side, the fork moves the other way.

The first thing I would do is verify the hoses at the transmission cross member are hooked up. Then I would remove the 4 bolts from the shift motor and remove the motor and start the engine and shift in and out of 4x4 waiting 10 seconds before each shift and see if the fork moves.

If it doesn't you will need to check the vacuum connector on top of the transfer case and make sure it is fully attached, if it is, you will need to remove the vacuum connector and check to see if you have engine vacuum on one port(around 15" vacuum). The ports are as follows - one port goes to engine vacuum, one port goes to a vent and the other two go to your shift motor. The hoses that go to the shift motor are bad for getting plugged, so you should use compressed air and see if they are clear.

If everything checks out, you will have to remove the switch on the transfer case and operate it by hand while the engine is running and see if the plunger moves in and out. Sometimes the plungers will stick in!

A vacuum gauge and pump are needed to check the motor and switch. If you don't have one, you might need to borrow one and put a vacuum on the shift motor and see if it holds vacuum. Once you put a vacuum on the shift motor the fork should move and then should pump down and hold a vacuum, if it doesn't hold vacuum, you will need a shift motor.

This is alot of info, but there are many possibilities for this not working and you will have to check all these things to diagnose this.

Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ?

If you have already tested to find the front drive shaft locks into place, and the front axle is the cause, looks to the front vacuum disconnect shift motor.
Item #10 in the parts diagram below :

Chances are the vacuum lines to the vacuum disconnect motor are cracked, the vacuum solenoids are not working correctly, or the vacuum to the solenoids is having an issue ( the reservoir ) :

The pink line is vacuum for 2WD operation ( unlocks the axle ) the light blue vacuum line is for 4WD operation ( locks the axle ).

You can test right at the vacuum disconnect motor with a vacuum gauge with the motor running. Unplug the shift motor, and check for vacuum right at the motor.

Could be the shift motor has a damaged diaphragm and not holding vacuum or has water in it ( saw that 1 time ).

Start with checking for vacuum. Also check the fuses for the vacuum solenoids, the power is always at the solenoid, ground is switched on and off by the GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) to operate them

4 wheel drive system not operating, have already repaced drive motor on transfer case, still not working

IF the front dive shaft does not turn, check that the vacuum shift motor on the front axle is operating.

The vacuum shift motor is vacuum operated ( name says that, I know ) the pink vacuum line is 2WD operation, the Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD operation.
If the motor does not move, you can check the vacuum lines to the vacuum solenoids on the firewall

Cant turn on 4wd


Have you checked if the problem is with the front hubs or with the transfer case ?
Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc ).
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

Next with the truck running, have someone turn the switch to 4WD, and you should see the shift motor diaphragm move

If not, could be the shift fork is stuck ( try manually moving ) or cold be a vacuum leak back to the vacuum shift solenoids

You can remove the 4WD mode switch, and test the resistance on it ( this is also the vacuum line routing )

You might find moisture in the vacuum shift motor diaphragm, not allowing the vacuum to operate it correctly.

I need to know what to do to get the 4x4 to work.


what year is it? chances are it is between a 1997 and 2003? if you look on the front differential (front axle) when the round cover on the front is, there is a vacuum solenoid. have someone start the vehicle and you can watch as they switch into and out of 4x4 make sure the arm on the vacuum solenoid is moving. if it is, the engagement fork inside the front diff is broken. if it is not, you have a bad vacuum solenoid or no vacuum applied. pull vacuum hose and check with vacuum gauge as vehicle is put into and taken out of 4x4

Front wheel will not engage for 4 wheel drive


very possible. Put your jeep on 4 jackstands and put in 4 wheel drive. if the front drive shaft turns pull the vacuum disconnect and check the shift fork. They usually break before the shift actuator.
