Try unplugging the mass air flow sensor. It's located on the air intake. If it runs fine without it, it's bad sensor. It basically boils down to is it getting spark, or is it getting fuel. Typically one is lacking. Also when is the last time you changed the fuel filter? They typically need replaced annually or two years depending on how much or little you drive the vehicle.

I have a timing problem. Low idle speed that is intermitten and causes a stumble at starts. This problem also occurres during normal running RPM's. Missing electronic signal but intermitten?

Could be bad sensor whether crank sensor, sam sensor, idle air control sensor, bad ignition module, bad coil or even timing belt. if you have a service engine soon light/creck engine light it's more than likely a sensor. If no light, probably timing belt/fuel filter plugged/ or weak fuel pump.

1997 audi a4 quattro, Got gas went approx. 3 miles then smelled gas inside the care and it started a very violent stutter and would die at idle for about 4 miles, then would smooth out and run fine, 3rd...

does the check engine light come on or flash when the running issue starts? sounds like you have an ignition coil dropping out intermittenly.

Speedometer, tack, fuel gauge, temp gauge have erattic behavior

With Ign. off what is your batt.voltage reading than take neg. cable off and take another reading 5 min. later. It sounds like a intermitten short, try to isolate voltage drop when acting up. Gauge circuit would be a good start. Schematic would be helpful.
