Question about 2000 Jaguar S-Type

1 Answer

Crankshaft? Has anyone ever had to change the crankshaft in a 2000 Jag S-type 4.0? I had this terrible knock months ago, changed the flywheel (was not the problem). The knock is extremely loud then as the car idles down the knocking is less, if a could say LOUD!!!

Car ran fine in the morning parked car and about 4 hours later i went to start and it started but there was a terible knocking and was running ruff, i tried to drive and about two blocks it stop and hasn't...

Does the engine still crank over at normal starting speed? If not, put a socket and wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt and check that engine still turns freely. If the engine is seized, you know what that means-the terrible knocking was a main or rod bearing being bad, and seized up on the crankshaft. You would need a new engine.

If the crankshaft still turns free, be very prudent about putting money into it until you have determined the cause of the knocking. That doesn't sound good, could still be a bad crankshaft bearing.

Try the crankshaft sensor, may be fogged with oil and dirt, if it's the type thats picks up off the flywheel it may have picked up iron filings from the starter and ring gear, giving a weak signal

I have an unnerving repeated knocking (louder than clicks) sound coming from my engine. the mechanic changes the main engine bearings but it won't go away. it goes away at high revs but very loud at lower...

I'm assuming your mechanic changed the rod bearings also. There is also a thrust bearing which keeps the crankshaft from sliding back and forth as it spins. Also check your flywheel/flex-plate, depending on whether your vehicle is auto or stick. Sometimes they crack and can cause a knocking sound.

I can't find the location of the crankshaft postion sensor in my 2000 Hyundai sonata

My online Sonata manual shows these possibilities, but does not identify which applies specifically to 2000 Sonata.
Also, when you talk to the dealership parts counter, you'll need to know whether your 2000 Sonata is (a) 4-cylinder 2.4L MFI DOHC engine, or (b) 6-cylinder 2.5L MFI DOHC engine.
Its easy to tell - just count your spark plug wires.

-- begine excerpt from 2000 Hyundai Sonata Repair guide --

The crankshaft position sensor is located next to the flywheel.
The crankshaft position sensor is located next to the flywheel/torque converter.
The camshaft position sensor is located on the engine near the timing belt cover and under the upper radiator hose.
The crankshaft position sensor is located on the driver-s side of the vehicle, down by the lower radiator hose.
The crankshaft position sensor is located on the engine near the crankshaft pulley.
The crankshaft position sensor is located at the front of the engine near the timing belt.

Flywheel

Have whoever is changing the flywheels check the crankshaft for "end play"...If the crankshaft thrust bearings are worn, it will allow the shaft to "walk" , or shift back & forth in the block. This action will def damage flywheels over time.
