On a 1996 Jeep Cherokee you have to pull the fuel tank.I am not sure on your model. It is not very hard to do. The tank on my vehicle is plastic and is held on by straps. Just put a jack under the tank and loosen the straps. As you lower the tank you can get to the connections to unplug the wiring. Once you have it on the ground, the fuel pump has a retaining ring that holds it in. It will unscrew and the fuel pump will come out.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. The pump is cooled by the fuel. Once the fuel level get down to the 1/4 tank, the fuel module has very little fuel to dissipate heat into. If the pump is aging and getting hot, this will cause it to bind and stop working. I don't believe the sending unit is bad, since your fuel gauge seems to be reading correctly. You have some choices here. You can get a new pump and have it installed in the existing module assembly. The pump runs about $90.00 US. Replacement involved pulling the fuel pump module from the tank, disassembling it and replacing the pump, reassembling it and replacing the module in the tank. You can replace the entire module, which includes the pump, strainer, float, sending unit. This runs about $230.00 US. These prices are for parts only. Labor is extra.
Open up the rear doors and reach in between the seam between the top of the back seat and the bottom. Unbolt the lower seat cushion from the chassis using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the bottom cushion away from the chassis and set it outside the vehicle.
2Open the gas door and remove the gas cap. Unbolt the silver fuel pump cover from the chassis using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unplug the electrical connection to the fuel pump with your hands. Put the key in the ignition and attempt to start the car. If it starts, allow it to run until the engine dies. Then remove the key from the ignition.
Disconnect the fuel line connections to the fuel pump, using a pair of pliers. Then pull the fuel pump and bracket assembly out of the gas tank. Pull the stock seal off the gas tank with your hands. Set a replacement seal onto the tank, then install the replacement fuel pump in the tank. Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel pump, using the pliers.
4Connect the electrical connection to the fuel pump, using your hands. Then bolt the silver cover to the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the rear seat cushion, using the ratchet
most often it is the fuel level sender, this is a variable resistor attached to a float inside the gas tank. so before you start pulling out the dashboard, drop the tank and take a look at the sender. on a car that old often the float has become corrupted and no longer floats on top the gas. before you drop the tank and pull out the sender, make sure you can buy a new replacement for it. there is generally a large O-ring around the hole it inserts in, get your hands on one of those too before you begin. the gas tank hanger straps may be too old to come apart and reassemble too so have a contingency plan for that. if the fuel pump is in the tank with the sender, there is some chance the sender was not reconnected when that was replaced if the problem arose after the pump replacement.
your engine's starving for fuel. your fuel pump may be bad. if your engine starts ok and it only idles fine, the fuel pump pressure may not be correct. the fuel pump pressure should be around 180lbs to the motor.a bad fuel pump can either quit pumping,or it may only pump just enough to start the engine, but not produce enough fuel to run it down the road.the fuel pumps located inside the gas tank under the car. most shops guage the price of removal and replacement of the fuel pump on how much fuels in the gas tank, the more fuel, the heavier the gas tank. a full gas tank can be super heavy and hard to handle under the vehicle. suggest that you call around local shops for a price of replacement fuel pump.also call local parts places such as auto zone or advance auto parts for prices of the fuel pump, that way you can guage the price of the pump against the labor the shops charge you. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com
sounds like the bearings in your fuel pump are going. These bearing are undoubtedly not replaceable without replacing the entire fuel pump.
Fix: replace fuel pump. Difficulty of fix: moderately advanced. You have to jack up car, drain the tank at the fuel tank drain
and then disconnect fuel lines (3), unbolt the (always rusty) bolts holding the tank, then go at the fuel pump replacement procedure, remembering to replace the fuel pump gasket.
If your car has a hatch in the top of the tank for fuel pump replacement (Hondas do), then use that access to get to the part - otherwise pull the gas tank and replace it that way, While you're in there, replace fuel filter(s) and strainer too (as a matter of course).
If the problem were clogged fuel filter, you'd experience loss of power going uphill, and it would not be able to made to "come back" by mashing on the gas pedal.
The fuel pump is in the gas tank. Disconnect all hoses and electrical wires from gas tank. lower gas tank. Remove ring that secures the fuel pump assembly and pull assembly out, be careful not to damage fuel float assembly. When replacing fuel pump, replace the sock and the fuel filter.
this is to clear the idea, your fuel pump is located at inside you fuel tank.this is not easy job for replacement, have a precaution doing this there fuel inside your tank if you wanna do this or fix your self, you have to remove electical source by pulling out first the one pole or terminal of your battery.to prevent in any spark, using syphon pump, you can empty your fuel tank evacuate all fuel inside your tank before pulling out your fuel pump.figure showing fuel pump/
disconnect all electrical connection on fuel pump.have a nice day
