Probably came loose from the shifter on the transmission. Dodge trucks are very prone to that problem.

Sounds as if the shift cable bushing is worn or broken at the transmission range switch.

Usually a problem with the brake pedal switch or the park lock solenoid. You would need to check the two components for power.

Parking pawl inside the transmission is sheared off. Drop the pan, and replace the pawl with a dealership piece.

1998 dodge ram 4x4 transmission problems

You will need to get the transmission rebuilt. With the info that you have provided the direct clutches are welded together. Becareful about getting it rebuilt, most shops see Dodge transmissions and they see dollar signs. You should be able to get it rebuilt for around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on amount of damaged hard parts. Thanks and good luck with your repair.
