Ok, the largest laundry list ever posted, and seems a 24year, 200k miles life time list. (all cars do this, not one walks past normal service, btw you skipped bad batteries, water pumps, belts, and wipers and full ash trays (LOL.)

bad ground to the Alt. loose belt did you set tension to spec>?
this post is like the poster child for why old cars are a pain
you have lots of company ,
200k miles. on a Prizm, er its really a Toyota Corolla. 1 of 40 million made, a record. in fact.
are you in the salt belt, (wiki that)?
you posted a huge list of items.
is that 24 year long list or just last year? ??????????????????
let me tick of some causes. (SLAT belt tops my list )
nobody ever say what state they live, making answer WRONG.

  • thermostats last about 7years, says president of STANT
  • but not those POS, failsafe brands. avoid like plegue.
  • 12 sets of tires, (12x4) or 3 x4>? my guess, 3 sets.
  • 66k miles per set is ok, but 16k per set is bad alignment.
  • 4 sets of wheel bearings, 50k miles each is ok but not
  • that bolts needs to be torqued to spec or the bearings fail easy ,need the Timken tests on that, have it.. its bad all bad, done wrong. as most are. (you know mech that hate torque wrenches on key bolts etc? those guys?
  • exhaust manifold cracked, this is common if the ECU goes to limphome mode, the manifold glows cheery red,and then cracks, we have videos of this,,,, not just on toyota's most rice cars do this. before 1996 (USA) where that mode is less rich then... and not glows. then.
  • now lets due the alternator. good the lamp works ,the belt must not slip, or engine bad idle at 300rpm and shake like wet dog. the wires off the ALT. must be good and the fuses to it not rusted . the alt uses the engine as ground, fails, on old and salt belt cars, they RUST, I take a nice 6 gage wire, and lugs
  • added and attach one end to the alt casing screw (ground)
  • and the other end to the battery neg lug. now its grounded for another 200k happy miles. the belt must have correct tension.
  • ill skip body rot.(over my pay scale)

Electrical short in the system somewhere. Thats what is burning alternators. Probably in the charging system circuit.

SOURCE: Battery and Brake light on, fans stop

Engine was running too hot, thermostat s/b 180, it was 195, antifreeze solution had too much water, this caused the radiator thermal switch to trip. I think the alternator was either bad, or the excessive heat made it draw too much. Two separate problems.

SOURCE: need torque setting for 1993 geo tracker front

i1m sorry to say that wheel bearings are not set to a torque specification, when you have repacked the bearings [ inner and outer ] ,reassembled it ,take the nut up until thewheel starts to drag and not turn very far when you try to spin it spin it backward and forward several times, grab the top of the wheel and try to push it in and out,if you getany movement at all tighten the nut a couple of castilations. do it all over again, spinthe wheel a few times and then try for the crossways movement again, if there is no movement ,you are very close to being comes the experience bit , iwould take it one more castilation of the nut because i know the feel that is need ed,,without that i suggest you put the pin in where you ereput the cap on and go for a 5 minute drive . whenyou get back ,jack it up and thespinning of the wheel again and try for the top crossways movement ,if there is any tighten thenut 2 castilations, and provided that when you try to spin the wheel by hand with a reasonably strong push the wheel should trael about 6 inches at least after your hand leaves it ,it is now a close as you are going to get itput it all to gether and for the next day or so put yor hand on the grease cap after you have driven anydistance, and you will feel it is warm but you should be able tohold your hand on the grease cap. there you have it ,any questions come back."youdoit"

Alternator and battery are new but battery goes dead after a few days; alternator tests ok as well as battery; been to 3 shops to be told that everything is ok; i need help

If the battery is loosing charge after a few days then there is a current draw that is not being accounted for .Remove the earth wire from the battery and place an ammeter in the circuit between the battery and the earth wire and read any current flow. If it is low say 2 amps you are looking at interior lights-glove box light-boot light etc If it is higher Fuel pump- head light module or relays-radio amps-alternator. If you have nothing then it will be the battery or the drive belt to the alternator is not adjusted properly or is incorrect if "v" belt and it is slipping under load. Have the battery load tested as just putting a multi meter across the terminals will not indicate failing cells. Have the out put of the alternator checked as it is possible for new alternators to be faulty and not charging more than 12 volts( Has to be 13.5 minimum)

Car wont start all the time

is the battery holding a good charge.....check gauge on dash, the needle should show about 13v . Also if your battery is well over three years old ...get a new one..about 600-900 cold cranking amps! your belt could be worn too if its never been changed, i would advise that you change it, it will help the alternator keep your new battery charged properly.

Flickering charge light

my car started running like ****, gauzes on dash went to 0 and then would shoot back to where they should of been. parked car, shut it off and then it wouldnt start back up. jumped it and drove home- the whole time it bucked and spitted and wanted to stall. had the alternator replaced and then immediately the volt light started to flicker- i have left my lights on numerous times which contributed to my needing an alternator so i went and got a new battery. so far so good. it has only been a couple of weeks since all of this happened so it might be a little premature to think that it is solved. but for now it works!
