3.1L has rod knock. I have 20yrs of auto mechanic and built a few engines, but retired now.


If the knocking is from the bottom of the engine, it may be the big end bearings have worn.
Replace them or not? Difficult question.

Replacing the big end (crankshaft/piston rod) bearings may stop the knocking/rumble noise. It depends on the crankshaft..

If the crankshaft has worn oval on its journals, fitting new bearings is unlikely to achieve anything as the bearings may break up due to the oval of the crankshaft. Removing the crankshaft and checking the journals for ovality/regrinding if necessary isn't a 5 minute job.

You say you have good oil pressure. That's a positive.

Personally, in your situation, I would try an engine oil additive that's designed to eliminate knock provided the main bearings haven't worn down to base metal. It's the cheapest option.

Failing that - and again, personally - I would remove the oil pan and fit new big end bearings in the hope that it would work.

The next step, if that doesn't work - would be to remove the crankshaft and have it reground and fit oversize bearings. Or get a 2nd hand engine...

You say the car was given to you for free .. you have nothing to lose. Try an additive first.. molyslip/molybdenum or whatever...

Why engine is knocking


Bad rod bearings, broken piston pin or worn pin. Worn crankshaft bearings. Defective crankshaft Harmonic balancer are common reasons for knocking sounds. Have shop listen to this.

I do think that loose key and keyway could cause the knock. It would also explain the loss of power, due to the engine timing not being spot on.
A knocking big end or main bearing would not improve at higher revs, it would get worse.

Act soon before the keyway in the crankshaft itself is too badly damaged, by removing the crankshaft pulley, lower timing belt cover, and belt guide. You can then get a precise idea of what exactly is worn. This may assist

Engine knocking


Are you getting any codes? Make sure oil is at the right level. If not, it will knock. You probably have a piston knocking.

Upper engine knock & blowby

Knocking noise just started. Gets worse when accelerating. Seems to go away at certain rpm.Not sure what it could be?


Worn wrist pin or worn connecting rob bearing, regardless it a sign or worn internal engine bearings. Try adding some Lucas engine oil additive and see if the knocking goes away. If it does then it's your connecting rod bearing and if it's still there. Then it's going to be a worn wrist pin and will need to be replaced before you loose the engine from a broken piston.

First, if the noise is from the upper part of the engine and is more of a tapping than a knock, likely you have a problem in the valvetrain, most often a bad lifter or worn rocker arm. If the noise is low, deep inside, the noise is from a bearing. This is generally accompanied by lower than normal oil pressure. Regardless of the underlying cause, correcting the cause will not stop the knock. To do that correctly, the engine needs to be removed and all crankshaft bearings and the crankshaft itself need to be replaced (crank can sometimes be "undercut" and thicker bearing shells can be used depending upon the amount of wear.) If caught very early, sometimes only one bearing can be replaced in-car, but in 99% of all cases I have ever seen, most will fail again, sometimes more severely if done this way.

2001 silverado - My engine knocks for a few


You may have a bad intake manifold gasket, which is leaking the antifreeze in to your engine. Note" Antifreeze is corrosive to the engine bearings" and the knocking your getting from the engine may be worn connecting rod bearing and the pistons are knocking till it warms up and expands to take up the space the worn bearings created. Replace the faulty gasket, change the engine oil and filter as much as possible to till you address the leak and add Restor engine treatment and Lucas oil treatment for now. This may stop or slow the knocking for now, but your going to have to tear the bottom end down and replace the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings if the knock has not gone away. As the weather starts to get colder, your going to have to warm up the engine before you start to drive, getting hard on the engine while it's still cold may cause the bearing to slip and then your looking at a bigger and more expensive job.
