Question about 2002 Audi A4

1 Answer

Check engine light and strong fuel smell when stopped with heat on.

This problem did not start until i turned on the heater last night coming home from work.  The check engine light came on this afternoon on my way to work and i noticed tonight on my way home that there is a strong, rich fuel smell coming into my car when i am stopped and idling (ie: stop lights etc.) i am a 1st time audi owner and i still have my warranty (i've only put 4k on the car since i've owned it, 69000 total). i was wondering if anyone could help me out with this until i can get in to see a mechanic and deal with the hassle that is bound to come about with my warranty.

Hi Shawn,

It sounds like it might be the oxygen sensor failing on your car. If it *is* the O2 sensor, it's not that expensive, from $50 to $200 and may be something you can replace yourself. But it's very unusual to have an O2 sensor fail so early. They typically last 60,000 miles or more.

At any rate, you really should get it checked soon. Running with a very rich fuel mixture will cause the catalytic converter of your exhaust system to overheat and cost many hundreds of dollars in additional repairs. It can also cause a grass fire if you park over dry grass with your overheated catalytic converter.

The first thing a mechanic will do is hook up a code scan tool to a connector in the car. This tool will show the error code that your engine's computer is complaining about. That code will probably point to the O2 sensor or something like that.

I hope that helps.

First question is - is the check engine light on ?
If yes you should check it for codes next.
You may have to use a scanner to watch the O2 sensor to figure out if it is too lean or too rich. I would also check fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge to make sure pressure is normal. Could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator among other things.

Hi,

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

If your not getting the MIL- engine light coming on and you can smell gas and you had the fuel pump replaced. I would sespect the electronic ignition module of being intermintent. It wouldn,t necessarily show as an engine code and would make it so the vehicle would run find one munite and not run the next The other thing you could check is the fuel filter however i can,t see a mechineic not changeing this with the fuel pump

Sounds like you had a fuel line break. Turn the car on until it stops. Try to follow the smell. Back or underneath or front. Look for pools of fuel. Inspect the top of the engine, fuel lines, rails and injectors.

you are getting far too much fuel or not enough air.check the airfilter first and the 02 sensor.a code scan will tell you which area is failing.

I have a 2002 grand am and less than a year ago had to replace cadalitic converter. The check engine light would come on once in awhile, and the car will start to bogg down. It started out as intermitent then eventually all the time. The smell may be the heating up of the converter.
