Trouble code this code came up po1421 on my bmw m5 secondary air system (bank 1 ) what is wrong

The secondary air pump runs for about 2 minutes when you start the car cold. It pumps some exhaust air back into the chamber to re-burn in order to reduce emmissions. Your pump is probably working fine, but there is most likely carbon buildup in the cylinder head where the air reenters (not in the combustion chamber). This issue should not affect your engine performance, and Powerchip apparently has an ECU update which ignores this error. Many posts on this. This thread should help

code P0455......... Evaporative emission system leak detected ( large leak ) check gas cap

code 1451...........secondary air system leak ( bank 2 ) check for vacuum leak

code 1423...........secondary air system leak ( bank 1 ) check for vacuum leak

code 0141...........02 sensor heater circuit ( bank 1, sensor 2 ) replace 02 sensor

These codes tell you the trouble codes listed below have been registered. The most common problem is when the SAI solenoid is bad it only costs about $25 on most models. And it normally only takes 10 minutes to install. I would highly recommend getting a good repair manual to guide you through this, and any future repairs.

1998 328i.. Got a 1421 and 1423 code...not sure where to start...


1997 BMW 328I 2.8L Customer Concern: MIL is on with trouble codes P1421 and P1423, for incorrect secondary airflow on both cylinder banks. Tests/Procedures: 1. Perform a functional test of the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) system. Tee a vacuum gauge into the vacuum hose attached to the diverter valve, located on the cylinder head towards the front of the engine.

2. Allow the vehicle to sit over night. Start the engine (cold) while monitoring the amount of vacuum on the gauge at startup. At temperatures from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius, there should be at least 17 inches of vacuum. At the same time, the AIR pump should run and pump a large volume of air into the exhaust. Potential Causes: A.I.R. Pump
Air Pump Relay
Restricted Cylinder Head
Diverter Valve
Tech Tips: These codes are related to a problem detected in the Secondary Air Injection system. Scan tools with BMW software include a feature to command the AIR pump on and off. The pattern failures for these codes are the AIR pumps due to leaks in the diverter valve and moisture or condensation in the AIR pump.

Possible fix but not all items. Just areas to look at:

HO2S (Bank 1 Sensor 1) Circuit No Activity

Possible Causes:


Leaks present in the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipes

HO2S signal wire and ground wire crossed in connector (voltage jumps)

HO2S element is fuel contaminated or has failed

ECM has failed



Trouble Code: P0172


Fuel System Too Rich (Cylinder Bank 1)

Possible Causes:


Camshaft timing is incorrect, or the engine has an oil overfill condition

EVAP vapor recovery system failure (may be pulling vacuum)

Fuel pressure regulator is damaged or leaking

HO2S element is contaminated with alcohol or water

MAF or MAP sensor values are incorrect or out-of-range

One of more fuel injectors is leaking



Trouble Code: P1128


Long Term Fuel Trim Add. Air. Bank 1 System Too Lean

Possible Causes:


Fuel pressure is too low or fuel quantity supplied is too low

Fuel filter faulty

Transfer fuel pump has failed

Fuel injector is faulty (sticking or not opening)

Engine speed (RPM) sensor is faulty

MAF sensor circuit open

MAF sensor circuit shorted to ground

Air leak in the manifold

Secondary air injection system combi-valve stuck open

Secondary air injection system electrical short

ECM has failed
