1983 brat not getting gas

She died and will not start, we have a spark, took fuel line off of filter and turned the engine over and no gas, no she is not out of gas, we put gas in just in case the gage was wrong, looks like the fuel pump which I know is in the fuel tank, is there a relay or switch of fusible link that could be bad and can be easily checked before I drop the tank to find out it was something else? Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem and we have not fixed it yet we replaced both filters the pump it is getting spark and seems to be gettting some gas. SHe starts but after about 30 seconds it dies. it runs real good for a small amount of time though. I do not think it is getting enough gas but when you hold your finger over the hose (off the carb) it has some pressure enough to produce a little stream. It runs for various lenghs of time before it dies. When you spay starting fluid down the carb it runs longer and better. but we just cannot figure out what the problem is.

I have a 1982, just replaced the fuel pump and both filters - solved mine. Fuel pump located forward of the fuel tank on driver's side just ahead of rear wheel. One thing that was a problem with these models is the hose materials themselves. If you haven't replaced hoses - do so - the new fuels with 10% ethanol tend to cause internal "warping" of the hoses that creates restriction. Also, if the carb hasn't had a kit, the rubber on the accelerator pump could be bad. For the 82 and 83 model Brat, finding the right fuel pump can be a problem - look for the 84 model and swap your electrical plug for the one on it - works great.

It could be the solenoid.I believe its separate from the starter on other Subarus & Brats of that year.

Before you drop the tank if its not to late i think the fuel pump isnt in the tank on this model.it should be next to the tank on the passenger side.just above the back wheel.also i think they are 2 fuel filters also on this vehicle one is on the firewall and the otherone is located right beside the fuel pump where i just described i hope this helps thanks jeff

No fuel getting Ito spark plugs

If no fuel is getting to the plugs the inyection system is not working. Check for spark in one spark plug. If you don't have spark that is the reason why the injection is not working. When there is no spark, the ECM or injection computer won't work because it needs a signal from the coil, as s proof of spark..

I have a 1983 rabbit. it was running. I took it off road to paint it. now it will start but if I hit the gas it dies. If i take out a spark plug it will continue to run but hit gas and it dies. any ideas?...

Well if you own one of these then your not afraid to get your hands dirty.
Try fuel pressure regulator might be stuck in closed position and flooding out plugs.
.
Items: in control circuit of fuel pump are: relay ignition switch.
One last item worth checking Mass airflow sensor, look for holes in plastic cover and make sure its clean.

My engine is cranking and turn on for a second but then turns off

Sound like a fuel problem check and make sure that fuel pump is working efficiently or at the time when Engine dies check for whats missing its either gas or spark . Get back to me if you need more help. ps on those cars if its loosing spark there is an igniter that's mostly to be blamed. Good Luck
