Sounds like a crank or cam sensor, very common with the 5cyl

Common fault is the fuel relay. You can either replace relay 103 in the relay box, next to the fuse box, or repair it by replacing the two capacitors inside the relay housing.

It sounds like fuel starvation. It's most likely your fuel pump relay or the fuel filter. To repair the relay, you can replace the faulty capacitors by reading the "how to" on "Mathews Volvo site" .com

Front oxygen sensor code. Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and make sure it is ok before you replace the sensor. Any vacuum leak can also cause the code.

Car stalls

I have a 1994 Volvo 850 that did the same thing. It was the fuel pump relay, a $50 part that is easy to replace yourself. It could also be the thermostat ($75) in the air flow box. Some people remove the bad thermostat and fix the air flow tube in the position with the air flow coming in from the front of the car. People say you can freeze your engine in winter if you live in a cold climate. It rarely gets cold where I live so it wasn't a problem for me. You do get better gas mileage without that thermostat. I ran my car without the thermostat for about a year and then put a new one in because I started having rough idling problems when the engine had not warmed up yet. The thermostat funnels in hot air from the manifold (?) until the engine warms up and then the spring in the thermostat closes off the tunnel with that hot air flow and opens up the tunnel with the cooler air flow coming in from the front of the car. If the thermostat quits working, the hot air keeps coming in and the engine shuts off after about 10 minutes of driving. The car will usually start right up after you wait a few minutes. These symptoms don't usually show any engine codes.

I have a 1996 volvo 850 station wagon and up until two days ago it worked perfectly for the past year. Now, however, when i start the engine it cuts out by itself after only a few seconds, and only won't...

Yes, it sounds like it is a fuel problem, whether it be the fuel pump, or more probably the catalytic converter. That check engine light can be checked by a mechanic where they can hook up to the engine and get the true error code to know why the light came on. Most often, it is an indicator that there is a problem with the catalytic converter. When that light goes on, the engine usually will run itself at reduced power. This could be why you are stalling when it is idle. Another thought is clogged fuel injectors, can't be sure, bring it to a mechanic for sure.
Good luck!! EJ Kudelka

Car is stalling and idleing irradically.

I Would Suggest That You Complete A Engine Cylinder Leak Down Test.....(not A Compression Test But A Leak Down Test) this will tell you if you have internal problems....possible worn rings or a burnt valve(s) I would use a smoke machine to check for vacuum leaks also. Good Luck

Volvo 850 wagon (nonturbo)

do a compression test as oil out the dip stick is usualy cauused by blowby or blocked engine breather. PCV.compression test will also pick up any problem with the head.when you pull the spark plugs out make sure they are the same color.
