Question about 2000 BMW 7 Series

Power Steering Problem

My power steering leaks and is hard at idle. It appears the leak is actually the fluid being backed up into the reservior and then coming out of the vent hole in the cap. I was told that the filter is clogged, but I cannot find the filter.

The filter is actually integrated inside of the resevoir. If your filter is clogged, you could try to remove the resevoir, drain it, and use compressed air to blow through the ports. Otherwise, I think it will need to be replaced.

Check fluid levels in your power steering/brake reservoirs and look for hydraulic fluid leaks in the power steering and brake lines. Could be a bad power steering pump too. Your owners manual should show positions of hydraulic reservoirs.

The power steering fluid leak is most likely a hose. BMWs are notorious for power steering hose leaks. On this car, replacing the power steering hose is not too hard once you get the air filter box and a few other things out of the way.
The smell is most likely the valve cover gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold. This is another very common problem on BMWs, and is another problem that is not difficult to correct. Once you take off the cabin air filter tray, the valve cover is easy to access.

Perhaps some dirts got in the reservior, or probably worn-out seals, or overfilling the reservior.

Power Steering pump appears to be leaking but is full????

Just guessing. Could it be a warped brake disk? That would cause vibration. And vibration in steering might conceivably cause splashing out the power steering reservoir. You would know if the disk were warped by a shudder when you brake at hight speeds.
