Stablizer sway bar link

Ball joint is broken (boot sleeve is torn) need find propper instructions for removal and installation to fix this problem

Remove the front wheel. Loosen the jam nut on the tie rod using pliers and wrench with lots of Liquid Wrench or other penetration oil. Back off the jam nut and mark the position of the tie rod end on the tie rod threads with paint.
Remove the cotter pin from the ballstud and then loosen the nut. Again more Liquid Wrench may be helpful. Now place the puller (special tool from auto parts store or Sears Craftsman) over the steering knuckle and separate the tie rod end from the knuckle. Fully remove the nut and then turn the tie rod end off the tie rod.
Installation is just the reverse with the new tie rod end turned on the tie rod up to the paint mark. Tighten the jam nut up to the tie rod end. Secure the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with the nut with a torque of 35 to 46 ft-lbs and insert a new cotter pin. Don't forget to reinstall the front wheel. Checking the front end alignment is recommended. Do not get the more expensive four wheel alignment as they cannot make any adjustment to align the rear wheels. ps Buy at least the Haynes Repair Manual for your car or splurge and buy the Ford complete repair manual.

Need to replace the ball joints in the front sway bar what are they called


Those would be sway bar end links. It is a very easy task usually, remove what is left of the old end link and then install the new one using all new washers and rubber bushing dampers.

Grinding and poping driving straight when i turn right it is a lot worse.!!!!


CV joints are bad. Look for torn boots and grease.

You do not state which vehicle, so the initial response is the CV joints. however depending on vehicle, you may have a dry upper ball joint on the left check the boot seal and grease it if there is a zerk fitting. On the right side, look for burnished areas where the tire may be rubbing. Also make sure wheels are adequately tight as well. inspect ball joint boots for damage, especially the upper ball joint- any damaged or missing ball joint boots warrant replacement. Also check the other steering components for play- they should be tight with no play. But they should rotate freely.

If you hear thumping when you go over bumps chech the sway bar links up front. There will be awishbone shaped link that is attached tot he frame, and the ends are attached to the lower control arms. The links should be snug.

I have a noise coming from the front strut area. It only happens when the car is moving and turning. Everything seems to be tight underneath and the CVs are ok. Maybe strut tops but it is hard to tell as...


Does the noise sound like a clunking sound? Very common problem on this year Tribute is worn sway bar link ball joints. To check this out you need to get under the vehicle and locate the front sway bar. It is connected on both sides to the strut with a long metal shaft and tiny little ball joints on either end where it connects to the strut and to the sway bar. Grab ahold of the sway bar end near where this link is attached and try to move the sway bar up and down. It should be very solid with no give at all. If you feel and/or hear a light clunking noise at either end the little ball joint on that side is failing and needs replaced. The ball joint will come with the entire like as an assembly and is easily replaced. Do however make sure that the nut that attaches link at either end has not come loose and is causing the noise before condeming the ball joint.

Replace broken sway bar for a 1996 ford windstar


Section 04-01: Suspension and Wheel Hubs, Front 1996 Windstar Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Stabilizer Bar Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Support vehicle with hoist or safety stands behind front sub-frame (5C145).
  1. stw~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: To avoid damage to the 6 mm drive hole in the front stabilizer bar link ball stud, do not use an Allen wrench to break loose or tighten or final tighten the front stabilizer bar link-to-shock absorber nut.
    Using care not to damage the front stabilizer bar link ball stud seal, remove the RH and LH front stabilizer bar link-to-front shock absorber nut.




  1. Using care not to damage the front stabilizer ball link stud seal, remove the RH and LH front stabilizer bar link-to-front stabilizer bar nut.

    With another set of support safety stands under front sub-frame, remove two rear sub-frame retaining bolts. Lower rear of the front sub-frame to obtain access to stabilizer bar brackets (5486).
  1. Remove front stabilizer bar bracket bolts, stabilizer bar brackets, stabilizer bar bracket insulators and front stabilizer bar (5482) as required.
Installation
  1. Clean front stabilizer bar to remove dirt and contamination in area of stabilizer bar bracket insulator installation position.
  1. Lubricate inside diameter of new stabilizer bar bracket insulator with Rubber Suspension Insulator Lube E25Y-19553-A meeting Ford specification ESF-M99B112-A or equivalent. Do not use any mineral or petroleum based lubricants as they will deteriorate the rubber stabilizer bar bracket insulators.
  1. Install new stabilizer bar bracket insulators onto front stabilizer bar and position them in approximate location.
  1. Install stabilizer bar bracket on stabilizer bar bracket insulators and install new bolts. Tighten to 55-63 Nm (40-46 lb-ft).
  1. Raise front sub-frame and install new front sub-frame-to-body retaining bolts. Tighten to 115-132 Nm (85-97 lb-ft).
  1. Install front stabilizer bar link (5K483) to front shock absorber. Use care not to damage link ball joint boot seal.

    Install a new front stabilizer bar link-to-shock absorber nut. Tighten to 90-100 Nm (66-74 lb-ft).

Replacing sway bar. cannot get new sway bar to propper position. how do i get it to fit propperly?


Your old sway bar made of tubular steel. New sway bar made from solid steel. You have a frame under engine the sway bar attaches too. This frame also supports your engine and trans mounts. Follow frame and there are 4 bolts securing same. Mechanic I watched supported engine underneath. Loosen back bolts though not removed. (please note sway bar has arrow that bar can only go in one direction) This maybe your problem. Attach bar to frame and fitting's. Best if you raise front end and remove both tires. Good luck

Suspension creaks when going over bumps also a poping noise when starting out driving.


Most likely shocks and or sway bar link kits. Check those items and all ball joints. I highly recommend Moog ball joints and sway bar link kits and Monroe Sensa Trac shocks

To replace front sway bar links


end links are straight forward, remove the old and install the new, sometimes you have some trouble if the ball end spins while removing the nut, look at the nut side of the joint and there is a hex key hole in the center to hold the joint still while removing the nut

Knock on left front suspension over bumps and rough roads


Have the sway-bar end-links replaced. They will thunk and rattle over washboard or severe bumps, but will not when wheels are turned and sway-bar is loaded.Fairly cheap and easy repair, no alignment needed.
