Question about 1997 Dodge Neon

Open Question

Starting Problem I've put a new valve cover gasket kit on the car due to oil found in the spark plug wells, i've put new Bosh plugs Platinum plugs in the car it's run a lot smoother now i've put a new intake air filter in the car, but i haven't changed the spark plug wires yet because i put new wires on it and kept the old spark plugs in and drove it and the car wad using to much gas so i changed the spark plugs and kept the old wires and noticed a big change in the gas usage could there still be a small problem with the wires i was thinking about changing the wires for the Bosh wires they seem to be better wires for this car could the timing be off, or is the little brain box that the spark plug wires connect up to you know that box that sits on top of the valve cover pan is it going bad? HELP!!!!!!

Oil in most of my spark plug ports!

The fault is due to the valve cover gasket passing oil into the spark plug wells. There are circular seals under the valve cover around each spark plug well opening. These spark plug well seals come with the valve cover gasket set.

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5L that is leaking oil into the spark plug tubes; can these seals be replaced or does the valve cover have to be replaced?

Yes, you need a Rocker cover (valve cover) Gasket kit. Remove the valve cover, remove all old O-rings and cover gasket, clean grooves and mating surfaces without gouging or scratching them, put the new gaskets on as per factory recommendations, tighten to the proper torque and you're done. The spark plug holes in the cover are part of the valve cover gasket kit. Any Napa, Car Quest, Pep Boys, Auto Zone will have it.

if there is oil on the plugs you might need valve stem seals or rings in the engine

Oil around spark plug and car mis fires

The oil around the plug may be a sign that the valve-cover needs a new gasket. Oil on the plugs can cause a misfire but it is important that you check everything over. The misfire could be due to defective wires, boots, coils, spark-plug/s, injector/s, and so much more. Take a look at the cars maintenance history, Maybe it is over due for a complete tune-up or oil change. The car is 11years old, how many miles are on it? How was it running before this?

How are the spark plug tube seals removed?

you have to remove the valve cover and flip it over to access them, best off to get a new valve cover gasket as well.

Spark plug well filling with oil.

a new valve cover gasket and o-rings around the wells should have cured this...did you clean the old o-rings off the valve cover completely before installing new ones? this is a common problem with these models.....i would re-check my gaskets and mateing surfaces. valve cover gaskets and spark plug well o-rings are relatively low cost. the spark plug is tight, correct? write back with an update!
