Ford Escort 1999 popping out of gear while driving

I have a 99 ford escort and while going around a corner or slamming on the breaks on the freeway it pops out of drive into neutral. Then I have to put it in park or find another gear really quick.

I took it into the shop and they pulled the code PO734. They couldn't fix it there and there really are no transmissions shops where I live.

Does anybody have any ideas on what is going on and what I can possibly do myself?

Very Best,

Transmission popping out of gear

Worn engine mounts may let the engine and transmission move too much, also the shift linkages may need adjustment.

Fuse box

On a ford Escort there are only 2 fuse boxes, one is located on the driver side, under the instrument panel, and the other under the hood.

Need diagram for replacing scerpentine belt in 99 ford escort zx2

go to and click the link on the left that says Part Locator & Interchange, put in your car info then look down the page and click the camera next to the serpintine belt. These belts are not usually hard to change, the tensioner pulley should have a 3/8" square drive hole in it to release the tension, I always start at the crankshaft and loop around leaving the tensioner for last, hope this helps, let me know
