It is usually a simple fix and does differ from car to car. I would say that if you are comfortable and have a little experience with autos then by all means do it yourself. You would most likely have to replace the sensor as they usually go out and not out of adjustment.

The 3 wire Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is mounted on the throttle body and is connected to the throttle blade.
The TPS is a 3wire variable resistor that provides the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with an input signal (voltage) that represents the throttle blade position of the throttle body. The sensor is connected to the throttle blade shaft. As the position of the throttle blade changes, the resistance (output voltage) of the TPS changes.
The PCM supplies approximately 5 volts to the TPS. The TPS output voltage (input signal to the PCM) represents the throttle blade position. The PCM receives an input signal voltage from the TPS. This will vary in an approximate range of from .26 volts at minimum throttle opening (idle), to 4.49 volts at wide-open throttle. Along with inputs from other sensors, the PCM uses the TPS input to determine current engine operating conditions. In response to engine operating conditions, the PCM will adjust fuel injector pulse width and ignition timing.
The PCM needs to identify the actions and position of the throttle blade at all times. This information is needed to assist in performing the following calculations:

Operation

Ignition timing advance Fuel injection pulse-width Idle (learned value or minimum TPS) Off-idle (0.06 volt) Wide Open Throttle (WOT) open loop (2.608 volts above learned idle voltage) Deceleration fuel lean out Fuel cutoff during cranking at WOT (2.608 volts above learned idle voltage) A/C WOT cutoff (certain automatic transmissions only)


Removal & Installation

3.7L & 4.0L

  1. Disconnect TPS electrical connector.
  2. Remove TPS mounting screws.
  3. Remove TPS.

To Install:
The TPS is mounted to the throttle body. The throttle shaft end of throttle body slides into a socket in the TPS. The TPS must be installed so that it can be rotated a few degrees. (If sensor will not rotate, install sensor with throttle shaft on other side of socket tangs). The TPS will be under slight tension when rotated.
  1. Install TPS and retaining screws.
  2. Tighten screws to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Connect TPS electrical connector to TPS.
  4. Manually operate throttle (by hand) to check for any TPS binding before starting engine.

4.7L
  1. Remove air duct and air resonator box at throttle body.
  2. Disconnect TPS electrical connector.
  3. Remove two TPS mounting bolts (screws).
  4. Remove TPS from throttle body.

To Install:
The throttle shaft end of throttle body slides into a socket in TPS. The TPS must be installed so that it can be rotated a few degrees. If sensor will not rotate, install sensor with throttle shaft on other side of socket tangs. The TPS will be under slight tension when rotated.
  1. Install TPS and two retaining bolts.
  2. Tighten bolts to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Manually operate throttle control lever by hand to check for any binding of TPS.
  4. Connect TPS electrical connector to TPS.
  5. Install air duct/air box to throttle body.

Where is the throttle positions sensor located


The Throttle Position Sensor, or TPS is connected to the throttle shaft on the throttle body.

According with the Grand Cherokee Repair Manual, check this removal & installation procedure...
(see Figures 5 and 6)
  1. Remove the air intake tube at the throttle body.
  2. Disengage the TPS wiring connector and remove the two mounting screws.
  3. Carefully remove the TPS from the throttle body.
To install:
  1. The throttle shaft end has a tang that can be fitted into the TPS two different ways. Only one of the installed positions is correct. When correctly positioned, the TPS can be rotated a few degrees. To determine correct positioning, place the TPS onto the throttle body with the throttle shaft tang on one side of the TPS socket. Verify that the TPS can be rotated. If the TPS cannot be rotated, place the TPS on the throttle body with the throttle shaft tang on the other side.
  2. Tighten the two TPS mounting bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm) and engage the wiring connector.
  3. Manually operate the throttle and check for any binding.
  4. Install the air intake tube.

My 89 Seville STS started to idle high sometimes but not all the time. Now it seems to be doing it mostly all the time. I just replaced the ISC myself with no change. Is there something else I can...


Yes, there is a procedure to get the engine to idle correctly. Turn engine off, key on Open the throttle and let in snap shut against the minimum air screw. The throttle angle displayed in diagnostics on ECM parameter ED01 TPS -1.0 to + 1.0. The TPS should be adjusted to fall into this parameter. After that has been done. Connect a wire from the -side of battery to terminal c on the isc motor. and a wire to the + side of battery to terminal d. The plunger should be at its highest position against the throttle lever to adjust. This may take a few times of applying power to get it to ratchet to full ext. The TPS parameter should be at 10.5 to 11.5 on the diagnostic center. Adjust by turning the plunger on the ISC. Press the cool blue button and the off button to get the diagnostic function up. Any more question please reply as I have a service manual and fixed my 89 seville for this problem.

Durango would shift in and out of overdrive while driving at a steady rate. Replaced the throttle position sensor and fixed the problem. here are a few causes for a bad tps. transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cutoff, hesitation on take off, surge while cruising down highway. have a good day ! tps is used by computer to monitor throttle position and adjust the speed, fuel and air to match throttle position. if tps is bad it will send wrong info. to computer. hope this helps !! if all else fails clean maf sensor. check tps first.

P0122 Code - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input

A P0122 code means that the the car's computer has detected that the TPS (throttle position sensor) is reporting too low a voltage. On some vehicles that lower limit is 0.17 - 0.20 volts (V).

Did you adjust it when you installed it? If the signal value is less than .17V then the PCM sets this code. Could be an open or a short to ground in the signal circuit. Or you may have lost the 5Volt reference voltage.

Symptoms may include:
* Rough or low idle
* Stalling
* Surging
* No/little acceleration
* other symptoms may also be present

Causes: A code P0122 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* TPS not mounted securely
* TPS circuit short to ground or another wire
* Faulty TPS
* Damaged computer (PCM)

Possible Solutions: Some recommended troubleshooting and repair steps are:
* Carefully check the throttle position sensor (TPS), wiring connector, and wiring for breaks, etc. Repair or replace as necessary
* Check the voltage at the TPS (refer to a service manual for your vehicle for specific information). If the voltage is too low that is indicative of a problem. Replace if necessary.
* If recently replaced the TPS may need to be adjusted. On some vehicles the installation instructions call for the TPS to be properly aligned or adjusted, consult a repair manual for specifics.
* If there are no symptoms at all, the problem may be intermittent and clearing the code may resolve the issue temporarily. If this is the case then you should definitely check the wiring to be sure it's not rubbing on anything, grounding, etc. The code may come back.

Code p0122 and p0123 after changing computer


Hi.

The problem is regarding TPS (throttle position sensor located in throttle body). Both codes are TPS voltage out of range (low and high) If you get both codes at once, then :

TPS may be defective,
wiring to TPS may be shorted to ground.
There may be a problem in the +5V circuit powering the TPS.
There may be a problem with ECU connector.

The Throttle Position sensor (TPS) is a potentiometer that provides a voltage signal to the PCM that is directly proportional to the throttle plate position. The sensor is mounted on the side of the throttle body and is connected to the throttle plate shaft. The TPS monitors throttle plate movement and position, and transmits an appropriate electrical signal to the PCM. These signals are used by the PCM to adjust the air/fuel mixture, spark timing and EGR operation according to engine load at idle, part throttle, or full throttle. The TPS is not adjustable.

Reset throttle position sensor on 87 ford ranger


Ok in the Haynes Repair Manual it say that the TPS sensor is non adjustable on a ranger. Now if you have an adjustable one you have a TPS block that you use to set this sensor. The best bet is to line up the slot in the TPS with the blade on the throttle shart.
