Adjust detent cable

There is no detent cable to adjust. Your transmission is probably a 4L60E which is electronic controlled by the computer. If it's not shifting into high gear then you need to take it to a transmission repair shop for analysis. 1st make sure you have the gear shift lever in 'D' and the tow haul button is not pressed in. Check your Instrument Cluster for the correct operation.

Leaking steering fluid

You need to trace the leak. Running the pump without fluid will break it. There can be a simple part, a line or connection, which will be quite inexpensive to replace. But you can destroy expensive parts like the rack and pinion steering unit as well as the steering pump.

Put steering fluid of the proper type into the pump reservoir if you intend to drive it to a repair shop. If it all leaks out in minutes, just have it towed.

The type of repairs. Typically you can find problems where the plastic clip holds the fluid supply line to the frame of your vehicle. (There is heavy metal known as a frame cradle on your style vehicle.) The fluid line travels to a cooling coil in the front bottom part of the car.

Repair of steering pump, some can be rebuilt but it takes some talent. Cheaper to get a Salvage part from junkyard. Rack and Pinion units can be rebuilt, can be exchanged or bought through Salvage.

A good Salvage choice is carparts.com and is National coverage network which ships to your door. Has free parts search, choice of price from different suppliers. Of course everything you may need is available new from autoparts stores like Autozone, Advance.

I have a 2000 grand am Gt v6 engine. and my car keeps over heating. everything is replaced on it, but i was told that i needed a head gasket but spoke with another mechanic and he said a new motor. At...

That is a sad story
You pay a professional to repair
your car and now doesn't know
what happened to his own repair

You shouldn't need a new motor
that would be silly
You most likely need a new head gasket,
unless that was what was just done!

You will need to drop the entire
engine out the bottom to work on it

I just watched that on You Tube a few days
ago on a car like yours

There is a toggle button on the dash that says POWER at up position and COMFORT on bottom, what is this for?

Power causes the transmission to change up sooner and more aggressively for quicker acceleration. But it uses more fuel and gives less ride comfort.

Comfort means tat the transmission changes up at a more leisurely pace and the changes themselves are smoother. It uses less fuel and gives a less jerky, more comfortable ride.

Power is harsher on the vehicle as a whole; it will cause the vehicle to need servicing and possibly repairs more frequently as it puts everything under greater stress. Comfort is kinder to everything, servicing intervals can more safely be "stretched", repairs will be less frequent and likely less costly and the shocks, tires, brake pads and rotors will all last a bit longer.

Please take a moment to rate my reply.
