I have a 1990 toyota camry, it is overheated very fast, its catalytic converter is clogged and i drilled a few holes in it to let some of that stuff out to let it generate right, but it is not wanting to stay crankedand when the engine gets to a certain temperature, the sound of the engine changes and if you hit the gas all it does is shake and you hear a pinging sound in the engine and when you cut it off it wont crank again until it cools all the way back down

Catalytic converters usually are only single. However, some models have more than one, such as my truck. It has one on each downpipe off of the manifold. However, your engine will only have a single downpipe and probably only a single converter. It is possible (as I can't remember if the 2000 frontier has two) to have two inline, but most likely it's only a single. You could have two mufflers however. A lot of foriegn manufacturers have gone with dual mufflers to give their cars that ultra silent running.

See a visual diagram of heat oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 for ford taurus 2001

bank 1 exhaust is the rear manifold towards the windshield side. Follow the exhaust down. There should be one oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter and a monitor after the catalytic converter. Be Careful.. they look the same.

Front Pipe REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Pipe Without Catalytic Converter
  1. Before removing any component of the exhaust system, always squirt a liquid rust dissolving agent onto the fasteners for ease of removal..
  2. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts.
  4. Support the catalytic converter, then disconnect the pipe from the converter. Remove the pipe.
  5. Remove the exhaust gaskets. To install:
  6. Be sure to use all new gaskets when required. Assemble the system, check the clearance and tighten the bolts to about 15-30 ft. lbs. (20-41 Nm). Fig. 1: Front exhaust pipe connection common on vehicles with the catalytic converter not included 86813320.gif

  7. All clamps should be tightened to about 18-25 ft. lbs. (24-34 Nm). Do overtighten the clamps. If pipes become dented they can leak.
Pipe With Catalytic Converter
  1. Before removing any component of the exhaust system, always squirt a liquid rust dissolving agent onto the fasteners for ease of removal.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. On some vehicles you will need to remove the brace from the transaxle.
  4. Remove the exhaust pipe nuts from the manifold.
  5. Support the catalytic converter pipe bolts from the rear of the converter.
  6. Lower the catalytic converter/front pipe assembly from the vehicle. To install:
  7. Be sure to use all new gaskets when required.
  8. Attach the new catalytic converter/front pipe assembly to the vehicle. Tighten the pipe to manifold nuts to 20-40 ft. lbs. (27-55 Nm).
  9. Attach the bolts at the rear of the catalytic converter/front pipe. Tighten them to 30-35 ft. lbs. (41-47 Nm).
  10. Connect the brace at the transaxle if removed.
  11. Lower the vehicle. prev.gif next.gif

Where in the engine is the catalytic converter

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system and is usually found under the vehicle, and the exhaust will run from the exhaust manifold to a pre-catalytic converter, and then down to the catalytic converter, and then the exhaust will run from the catalytic converter to the exhaust muffler, and then continue out to the end of the tail pipe.
I have provided an image of the catalytic converter to help assist you.

Oxyogen sensors how many and where are they

There should only be two, they are screwed into the exhaust pipes,
One up near the engine, and the other one down by the catilytic converter. Both have wire connectors on them.

Not just a faulty catalytic converter will trigger this code. Many other issues can trigger this code.

  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Delayed spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Possible solutions:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter.
  • Replace Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2)
  • Replace the catalytic converter
  • Have timing adjusted
