Question about 1994 Buick Skylark

1 Answer

Rear brake lamps

All lights are working except for brake lamps. The third stop lamp comes on, but not the two main ones. I put on a new stop switch and changed the lamps. Also changed out the 20 amp blown fuse.

Can you identify the bulbs that should come on when brake is applied? Is it a single filament bulb or two? If cyclops brake light is on when the brake is applied means you have a working switch to apply power when brake is used. When you have identified what bulb filament is to be activated use a test light on the wire that is to activte that wire. You may want to have someone or something to keep the brake pedal applied during these tests. If you have power at the socket check the barrel of the socket and see if the ground has been damaged from rust etc. If you have no power and you have identified the wire such as green/black or yellow/black follow it to the wire bundle where the cyclops light has power. Splice into the wire from the cyclops light to the tail light wire, you may have to check for wire color on both sides to see if they are the same. Some vehicles use the turn signal along with the brake light and they have two different colors. After you have made this connection test your turn signals and park lights. Also while you a following the bundle check for broken or bare wires this may have been damaged and your original cause. Good Luck.

I worked for a GM dealership,The problem maybe in the turn signal switch. The brake lamp circuit is wired into it to turn off cruise control. The third brake lamp is a circuit by itself.

I have a suzuki xl7 2005 model my brake lights are not working I've checked fuses and also the third brake light, fuses are good but it looks as though the bulbs on the third light are blown whatcould

all brake lamps are dead.
and fuses are good. (did you check the right ones, or all?)
what about 3rd lamp?
if they look blown they are, why question that for $1 lamp.
replace lamps that are blown, the filament goes byebye.
fuse #9 is STOP, replace this on suspission
fuse that look ok, can have hair line cracks, we test them with a meter. so as not to guess...
next is this power 12vdc from stop fuse goes to the
stop switch and if stopping (foot brake) the output goes to 12vdc and all lamps on rear (stop)glow.
its cave man simple (unlike new cars that computers do all that)
now my advice, replace all 3 lamps
or take them out 1 by 1 and try them 1 by 1.
because lamps can SHORT and blow that fuse.
all there can be hand for $3,... and a new fuse for 50 cents.

1995 Buick Riviera, brake lights won't come on except for the one in back window

I am thinking that the brake lamps in the rear taillamps went through the turn signal/hazzard switch. Play with your hazzard switch and see if they start working. If not, check the brake lamp switch with a test light. I believe the high mount stoplamp had a seperate wire than the taillamps for brake lights.

HOW TO WIRE BRAKE LIGHTS FROM THIRD LIGHT 97 MONTE CARLO

Instead of improvising, why not get the stop lamps working the way they should be. You must be getting power through 15A fuse 23 in the fuse block and the stop lamp switch, otherwise the high mounted stop lamps would not work. Stop lamp power is routed through the turn signal switch and is applied to the tail/turn/stop-lamps. That should solve your problem

Brake lights don't work on 95 crown victoria

Battery power is applied through 15A fuse 1 in the I/P fuse panel. It passes through the brake on/off switch and is routed through the multi-function switch to the stop lamps. When the brake on/off switch is closed, the stop lamps light. Possible failures include the fuse, the brake on/off switch, the multi-function switch, and the filaments of the multi-purpose rear lights.

MY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT (LIGHT IN REAR WIND SHIELD) IS CONSTANTLY ON IS IT SUPPOSED TO REMAIN ON AT ALL TIMES, CHECKED BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH AND IT IS GOOD WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE

On some vehicles the lamps are controlled by a SAM( Signal Acquisition Module.)When these fail weird stuff happens.

The bulb needs power to come on and if the rear brake lamps are off, and not just burnt out, the third lamp cannot come on unless there is a faulty SAM or wiring short supplying the bulb with power..

Check your brake lamps come on with the brake pedal depressed first... if not, your brake pedal switch is bad or no power to it. I have often found both bulbs faulty on may cars.

I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE BREAK LIGHT NOT WORKING, HAVE CHECK THE BULBS, FUSES, RELAY SWITCH ALL SEEM TO BE OK, STILL WILL NOT WORK. THE TOP BREAK LIGHT IS OK. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I LOOK FOR? THIS...

If the top brake light is working, then the brake light switch on the brake pedal is ok and adjusted properly. GM had major problems with the circuit boards on these....check for power at the circuit boards with the brake pedal depressed.
Also, the brake/stop lamps are wired thru the Turn Signal switch which on this model is the multifunction switch...I have seen this fail many times, it's expensive and not a repair that can be made in a few minutes, takes several hours and a lot of paitence.
Did you check the fuses in the rear fuse box as well?...I suggest you call your dealer or GM direct and see if your vehicle falls under any of these recall notices---i bet it does. If the recall repairs have not been made, then they will do for you at no cost. You will need to have your VIN number ready when you call. Below is a brief description of a recall notice.

Recall Summary:ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.

Consequence:AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER¿S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. RemedyDEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463. NotesGENERAL MOTORS CORP. 04087

The Rear Lamp Failure light comes on, and Ii have no been able to locate where this is located. I do not have an owners manual. I have checked the tail lights, brake lights, even the tag lights, and I am...

Nice SUV, I have the same with 5.2L V8 Limited!!!

Are you sure that there are no lights out?pay attention to the third brake light because it has 3 bulbs and if one is outit will give you that message.also make sure that all of the bulbs are the right ones.

I used to get the "Rear Lamp Failure" message on my '93 Limited after the lights were on for a few minutes... it went away when I changed the rear bulbs to the same brand. The Lamp Outage Module (located in the LR quarter panel, near the fuel filler) is looking for differences in current flow between the left and right side bulbs.

You probably need a new lamp outage module...
CIRCUIT OPERATION
The Lamp Outage Module (LOM) determines if a rear lighting lamp is not operating. When the ignition switch is in the START or RUN position, circuit A1 from fuse 8 in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) connects to circuit A21. Circuit A21 feeds circuit F87 through fuse 5 in the junction block. Circuits F87 feeds the LOM.
- Circuit G46 from the LOM connects to the Vehicle Information Center (VIC) . When the LOM senses a inoperative lamp, the VIC displays the data to the vehicle operator.
- Circuit L90 which feeds the tail lamps and side marker lamps, connects to the LOM. From the LOM, circuit L90 continues to the license plate lamps. Circuits L21 and L22 from the LOM power the tail lamps and side marker lamps.
- Circuit L50 from the stop lamp switch connects to the LOM. From the LOM, circuits L73 and L74 power the stop lamps and circuit L87 powers the Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL) . Circuit Z1 grounds the LOM.
