Question about 1995 Mazda Protege

2002 Mazda Protege 5: I am having a knocking sound coming from my front right of the car.The noise is most noticable when turn right with speed. The noise is also there when driving straight but not all the time.My mechanic replaced the right CV joint but it did not help.He put the old one back in as it was only a year old. It almost feels like the drive wheels are not acting together when driving.Possible solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill

I would check the sway bar linkages, they are usually the first to go, and they are only $40. Its an easy 'do it yourself' project, remove the old one with torches or a grinder (with a small cutting wheel). You can also use a vise grip and sockets but it takes longer.

You can't tell these are damaged until you remove the part. I change mine every 100 000km or so.

Hi if the knockings on the right wheel and is worse when turning right you wouldn,t change the cv joint as if the knocking gets worse when turning right for the fault to be the cv joint it would be on the left wheel you would hear the noise so you are sure when you turn right the noise is on the right not the left as this would more than likely be the left cv joint but of what you have said if there was any wear in the control arm bushes or any suspension part i would expect a wheel vibration through the steering wheel now is the noise a dull knock if so check the fixings that fasten your suspension parts to the body if its a hard knocking try suspension to suspension bolts and bushs especially top and bottom ball joints yates210456

Don't know your specific car but some (I own one) front wheel drive cars have two joints; an outer one (that isn't bad in yours) and another that has more limited movement close to the transaxle. This one allows sliding motion while transfering power and is less complex than the outer one.
Your mechanic might want to get the front wheels off the ground and run the car in gear while excerising the steering wheel to see if you can produce the noise even with no load on the wheels and drivetrain. A sloppy joint will generally make noise under those conditions too.

My 2000 model mazda protege makes a clunk when making sharp turns, accelerating or shifting from 1st to 2nd gear?

Sounds like a bad cv joint. Easy way to check is to raise the front of the vehicle so both front tires are off the ground. Use jack stands under the vehicle and block the rear tires. Start the engine and put the tranny in drive. Let the front wheels rotate while the engine is idling and turn the steering wheel slowly in both directions. Listen for the clunking noise. You may have to speed the engine up a little to make it work.

Front wheel noise

Does this knocking noise mostly happen when you are turning the car? If so this is caused by a worn CV joint. It's not an expensive fix, but I would rather go to a mechanic than attempt it without prior knowledge of how to repair this. I hope this helps.

Knocking trom font of car when....

sounds like a cv axle noise i have found you cant change inner without outer, for the time spent you should replace the axle as a whole,,much easier too. front wheel drive cars are hard on front end bushings and etc. the coil springs seem to sqirm in there saddles when they get old too making creaking noises, no big deal on ford escort, tempo, topaz, sable,,,,,

Grunting and squealing sound from the right rear strut area

a worn strut could make that noise but it could also be the strut mount its self the only true way to see if it is the problem is to remove it from the vechicle. but if you dont feel the need to do this try spraying some rust check or lubricant onto everything that you see that moves. i hope this helps.

Grinding noise in front end

Hi
Had the exact same problem, on a used 2003 Protege ES with 82,000 miles that I purchased.
Started with the loud "road noise" I thought well maybe thats just the sound that it makes.
And then noticed that it varies when turning.
This will continue to get worse and then your abs light will come on when it gets bad enough to trigger the sensor..
It turned out to be a bad wheel bearing.
Take it to a shop and have an experienced mechanic check it out. Its repairable.
