Question about 1997 Nissan Sentra

Engine cuts out

Hi. I went through a ditch and my car switched off. Now when I start it, I have to keep it on a high rev or it cuts out. It drives fine while I got my foot on accellerator, but as soon as we come to a robot and I put in in neutral and take my foot off accellerator, it cuts out. Any ideas?
I've now put it on a high rev (over 2 000) to keep it idling in neutral.

I spoke to another fundi and he said that my fuse could be blown under the hood that keeps the fuel pump going and/or I should check the wiring to the carb and see if any came loose during the jolt when I went through the ditch. Especially the wires that operates the fuel jet. this makes sense, Yes?

Maybe when you went into the ditch you partially pinched your fuel line so now your not getting enough fuel to the motor?Crawl up under your car and see if you can see any damage to the fuel lines, or anything else...filter etc.

Yeah, except that car should not have a carb, it should be fuel injected, but the wires to it may have jarred loose i guess...

IT IS DOING WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO DO. THE REV LIMITER IS TO KEEP YOU FROM HAVING HIGH RPM WITH NO LOAD ON ENGINE

No driving will only further damage the parts that are bad and could damage other parts making it even more costly. and it sounds like tranmission problem.

Yes that is normal. The ECM has no reason to let the engine rev higher than 3000 RPM when in Park, so it starts randomly cutting spark to different cylinders. That is why it shudders.

Hi there!

This sames strange but i would say you might have a transmission problem that makes the car revs up because it look like it keeps downshifting after a high Rpm which makes the engine idles high. Good luck

Have 1999 cavilleir does it have a rpm protecter

Yes, the PCM for your vehicle's engine has a rev/speed limit seeting programmed into it. Most stock, non high performance/police package vehicles usually won't go above a top speed of 97MPH. if you were to rev your engine while it was in park or neutral, once the engine reaches the cut out rpm limit preset in the PCM, it will cause the engine to cut back, then it will rev up until it hits the preset limit, then cut back, and it keep repeating that pattern. It may sound as though you have a high rev ignition failure that sounds like waaa, waaa, waaa, waaa, but that indicates the PCM is doing its job.

It sounds like the plugs are bad or not heating correctly. Running it out of petrol can mess them up like that sometimes.
