Its a lot of work to get the cylinder head off before you replace the gasket and when the head is off,you will need to have it skimmed or it will blow the gasket again. you will also have to set your engine timing at rebuild so unless your a wiz with cars see a garage. Could cost you anthing over 1600 dollars

I don't find the question. What you say sounds like a good approach. Get a manual and go for it.

1998 sl1 oil in water running hot

If you have oil in your coolant then your head gasket is blown. Be careful, and don't let it fully overheat because you will warp your head and have to buy an entire engine.

How to fix a headgasket

requires pulling the head off and replacing the gasket. not an owner serviceable repair unless you have a lot of tools. while you are at it you will want to do the timing chain as well. might make more sense to buy a lower mileage compatible engine out of a junkyard. most saturn engines from 96-98 will fit in there, you must make sure that if yours is a SL2, meaning DOHC your donor vehicle must have the DOHC as well as the transmissions are different on the SOHC cars. SC1 and SL1 and SW1 have the same engines and SW2, SL2 and SC2 are the same. something i learned a long time ago was that if you have a valve job done on the head before you put it back together, the piston rings will go bad within a few weeks. good luck

Saturn sc1, oil leaking into antifreeze

We just went through the same thing on our 1997 SC1, replaced the head gasket and the oil in the coolant issue persisted.

Pulled a cylinder head out of a 1995 wagon and put it in, the problem has cleared up after a LOT of flushing with powered automatic dishwasher machine detergent and water. We also replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat and water pump once the flushings were complete.
