SOURCE: 1998 Ford F-150 4-wheel drive won't engage

It sounds as if you have a vacuum solenoid problem.
The 4x4/4x2 vacuum solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly. They are grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated.I would first of all make sure that you have power to them on the W/LB wire with ignition in run postion. If not then check fuse 23 (10amp) in the interior fuse panel.Disconnect the solenoids and measure their resitance should be between 50-100 ohms.

SOURCE: 89 jeep cherokee 4 wheel drive won't engage gears

If I recall correctly, there is a small vacuum line that connects to the transfer case that sometimes clogs or pops off, preventing the 4wd from engaging.......

a reluctant transfer case can sometimes be coaxed by shifting into reverse, backing up 10 feet, and then back to forward.

Jeep won't go into four wheel drive? 4wd light is coming on but is not engaging

no year car.
no model jeep stated.
now 4wd option stated (
command trac, Select track. quadra-trac/drive?,)
or if unknown what transfer case is there (tag on rear says)

the front axle have the vacuum valve on it.
does it work, the vacuum servo ( test it?)
if no vac. servo there, that is the newer jeeps.

is this your jeep?

98 Grand Cherokee Loredo 4X4: When turning the wheel all the way right the back right tire seem to freeze up then lunge grabbing traction. The same happens when the wheel is turned all the way left. ...

Is this a manual 4 wheel drive system that can be shifted into 2 wheel drive? These type of systems should be in 2 wheel drive for tight turns. The drive train locks the differentials to make it 4 wheel drive and with the 4x4 engaged it creates this lunge grabbing effect.

How to shift a 1998 jeep grand cherokee into 4 wheel drive

Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.

1998 Jeep Wrangler - Looking for proper way to put into 4 wheel drive and take back out to 2 wheel drive. Unsure if vehicle is suppose to be reversed after engaging or unengaging.

Best way to attain engagement without any grinding etc. is to pull 4x4 lever into gear while rolling at low speed. You can also in an emergency, turn the engine off and engage, then re-start (when you have been in 2wd and have gotten stuck in mud and can't roll) When dis-engaging, generally it will shift out with no problem while moving, but if it does not, then you can back up about twenty feet and usually that will work. (still beats getting out and doing it manually at the hubs!!)

This sounds like the linkage could have fallen or broken off. Have someone move the 4wd shifter while you look under the vehicle.

I know this sounds stupid but how do i engage my four wheel drive on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo? I dont have my owners manual here and i have never used it before.....Do i shift into while the car...

You do it with the engine on and put it in neutral. To place it on 4WLO or 4WHI. It all depends if you have a auto 4 wheel drive these type engage the 4 wheel drive automatically when the wheels spin to about 16 MPH. Then there are the ones you press a button to engage it to 4LO , 4 HI or 2WDrive. The last is you have a lever that you manually place in whatever position you want. 4LO, 4 HI and 2Wdrive.

91 wrangler 4 wheel will not engage

Check your fluid levels, you need to verify that the transfer case has fluid in it. Also, on one of my old jeeps the lever that put it into 4 wheel drive just stuck a litle. After yanking the **** out of it and moving it back and forth, drive a litle then stop and do it all over again.. a few times. it went into 4 wheel drive. this is why you are suposed to engage your 4 wheel drive once a month and drive around the block, just to make sure it gets flid where its supose to. if it doesn't get engaged then the fluid just sits at the bottum of the transfer case and doesn't get up on the gears.

Front wheel will not engage for 4 wheel drive

very possible. Put your jeep on 4 jackstands and put in 4 wheel drive. if the front drive shaft turns pull the vacuum disconnect and check the shift fork. They usually break before the shift actuator.
