Question about 2001 BMW 325

Car died while driving

My 2001 325i died while i was crawling along in slow traffic. Lucky I was able to swerve onto the grass median. The engine symbol light came on (as well as the oil symbol, but that is an old unrelated issue, oil is fine) It just died, so I turned engine off, put it in park, waited a minute and tried to start it. It did start and I had no trouble driving it later but I am concerned about a possible huge engine repair.  Has anybody had simmilar problems? Any ideas what it might be?

Thank you for your input jrod.
It has not happened since and I hope that will be the end of it.
My husband suggested that I may have accidentally put it into standard (tiptronic?)
    I dont thinks so.

It could just be a sensor malfunctioning from possibly getting too hot. as everyone knows slow traffic sucks....well its hard on the car too because the car gets alot hotter in the engine bay due to lack of air flow.....heat like that can make sensors malfunction everyonce n awhile....i wouldnt worry bout it unless it happens again...which it shouldnt.

Hi my 2006 3.2 blows puffs of un-burnt diesel smoke intermittently after it has been driven in traffic

have the variable vanes in the turbo checked for correct operation
there is an actuator that is vacuum
electrical sensor controlled and the vanes may be sticking at slow engine operations as on traffic
the smoke color indicates incorrect air/fuel ratio and the turbo is a point to investigate

Check engine comes in when engine starts to overheat, which it does in slow traffic. Radiator, fans, water pump are OK.

Did you check/replace the thermostat? Another possible cause may be hair line cracks in the head(s).

If you have a viscous fan hub then have it replaced as it is not drawing air through the radiator at idle or slow speed (crawling traffic). Check that are no air locks in the system as they will cause heating problems.

could be the tie rod ends or another steering component related to that. I know that it is definitely a steering issue.

I have this problem with my K Reg Audi 80 1.9 tdi...Driving along say 50mph in traffic, take foot from throttle due to traffic flow, put foot back on throttle and nothing happens unless you either let...

you car is fitted with a "no fuel"system,so when you take your foot off "no fuel" goes to the engine untill it reaches 1200 revs.then it will allow fuel to flow to keep tickover/smoothness.(its computer controlled)you need to get your car onto the diagnostic computer,(skoda/seat/vw/audi)so you have the codes/items that need to be sorted. The tdi engine was one of the first engines that VW computerised and it is very reliable/powerful,compared to the peugeot/citroen engine.(briefly, the fault is not just a switch/cable),

Loose power when run over flooding area and noisy, but it comes back to normal after 15-20 seconds

if you mean standing water in the roadway... you are probably driving too fast thru the water and splashing water onto the wires causing the engine to miss. after a few seconds you get lucky and they dry out from the engine heat. new wires plug wires may solve this or just drive slow enough to avoid splashing so much. chibasset

I have a problem with my gear box i have a jeep grand cherokee

Your transmission apparently is not downshifting properly. From your description, it sounds as though it is in 2nd or 3rd gear, which is why it is slow to accelerate. When you shift into 1st, it is starting off in 1st gear as it should. You probably should have a transmission shop check it out. Check engine light on?
