Question about 1998 Volvo S70

1 Answer

2000 Volvo s70 sedan won't run smoothly when holding it at a steady acceleration

Ok. Here we go. It's hard to explain but my Volvo won't run smoothly when holding it at a steady acceleration. It accelerates like the proverbial bat out of hell, runs great and starts easily. It's if I get to 55 it starts running rough - almost like the engine isn't getting power. When I accelerate out of that it runs grand until I try to steady out again - then same thing. Any help would be great as YIKES I just bought the car today!!!!

Thanks very much! I'll try all those tomorrow but in the morning I'm going to go to my local Volvo Expert and see if they can offer any insight - they worked on the car for the last few years and should be aware of any issues. Like ETM/ETS issues. R

Well it's in the shop right now. Let's hope it's not too serious. I'll post the results. Guy in shop suspects transmission.

    Hey CookingFat,

It turns out to be the ECM. Volvo are supposed to repair it free (2000 car/90000 miles).

    Thanks for your input though!!!

Sounds like fuel starvation. Would suggest cleaning any filters in the fuel line or replacing.
Also check the stop idle valve. This should be inline in the air intake pipe to the intake manifold..
Remove it and clean with WD40.Make sure you note the orientation of the spring.
To reset the ECU disconnect the battery for 5 minute the reconnect. The ECU should reset to factory settings. Make sure you know radio and alarm codes!
Try petrol additive STP or Redex to clean inside the engine.
Thats as far as my knowledge goes, hope it helps.

I would like to get a Chilton/Haynes type maintenance manual for my 2000 Volvo S70 Sedan. Where can I get one?

I know autozone sells the chilton/haynes books. Check their website. Also do web search for chiltons.
You can buy any of their products there, from the
paperback manuals to $5,000 diagnostic software.
Hope this helps.

Car hesitates at 65mph. In park, when you step on gas pedal half way and hold steady engine revs up and down.

Probably a failing throttle position sensor. Take it to a mechanic for a diagnosis.

An Arrow indicator light flashing repeatedly at intervals

Something is going on with the transmission control system. You need to find out what codes are stored in the system. Most likely the transmission range switch is failing.
